Big Willie....... LA

Re: Big Willie....... LA
In the opening scene of Two Lane Blacktop you can see Big Willie running his '69 Daytona in a street race right before the star '55 runs against a '70 AAR Cuda (later said to have a Hemi w/a Torqueflite)

Re: Big Willie....... LA
His wife has the "FRO" in the pic and her name is Tomika......
Ken https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif I can remember useless info like that , but can't remember any of the kids birthdays.....go figure |
Re: Big Willie....... LA
A lotta people have always wondered what happened to that hemi Daytona. The rumor I heard was that the body shell was acid dipped a little too long and caved in on itself in the acid dip tank and was scrapped. Anyone else have any info?

Guess I'm watching Two Lane again tonight. I'm just saying that guy looks scary; even if I had a car that would beat him, would I do it? |
Re: Big Willie....... LA
While we're on the topic of legendary street racers and their rides, how about "Brookyln Heavy" and his Motion Camaro? Anyone got some vintage pics?

Re: Big Willie....... LA
I know the Motion Ribbon Car was street raced a few times here in Hawaii https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Big Willie....... LA
Big Willie is a living legend among street racers. That is him in the opening minutes of Two-Lane Blacktop flagging the cars off with hand-held lights. One of his Daytonas is still around in rough, unrestored condition and is still displayed with one of the original street racing brotherhood jackets. Quite a thrill to see in person. I'll try to find photos.

Re: Big Willie....... LA
I watched that Daytona run a few times on the street
in San Pedro, Cal. down by the docks and @ O.C.I.R. and Lions Drag strip in the early '70's. I remember the car breaking something at O.C.I.R. That street race we went to must of had 500 people watching. I was 15 at the time. Made a copy of my mom's car keys. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif |

I think he also teched the cars at OCIR on Wednesday nights (Grudge Nights) Or...I could just be getting old... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif ***EDIT*** Now that I think about it...I think the guy I was thinking about was "Big John"...so I'm getting old...sue me! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |

SS454Elky
Thank you. I knew nothing about Big Willie other than he is one bad ass looking dude with next to a bad ass car. Now I see he is the type of person I wish I could be, more concerned about others than himself. I don't know what the current status is of his aspirations; as Barry put it, but I wish Big Willie the best. |
Re: Big Willie....... LA
SS454Elky...I'd like to say thanks, too!
Geez...after watching the Car Crazy video...It WAS Big Willie! HE was a cool guy then...and it looks like he's found his lifes calling. I wish him the best, too! |
Re: Big Willie....... LA
Get this...that car was just found in the last 2-3 years still in Big Willie's backyard. A few Mopar magazines have interviewed him back in the nineties but Willie never mentioned the car was back there and nobody bothered to look back there either. Last I heard, plans were to leave it alone though it is a running car now.

Re: Big Willie....... LA
I read a little about that on a Mopar sight last night. Showed some attached pictures, but non of them worked.

Re: Big Willie....... LA
There is a guy from Kentucky on this board who claims to own Big Willie's car. Is this the same car mentioned in this thread?

Re: Big Willie....... LA
I just don't know about these cars, but am very willing to learn more. Maybe that is the tan car on the trailer?
|
Re: Big Willie....... LA
Mark, the "starter" in the opening scene wasn't Big Willie, it was another member of the Brotherhood of Street Racers named "Mousey". If you look back at the first post with the photo of the American Racing rims ad, you'll recognize him second from the left (with the glasses). I actually heard he passed away recently. Big Willie was in the film, though. He was racing his King Daytona (as you already know).
