Take a looka t this engine pad assembly code

I saw a 396 block on the "bay" today and I was wondering
if you guys think it is an original stamping. The eBay
item number is: 4598412373

The JL suffix appears to be lower than the rest of the
code. I've never seen one like that before. I'd just
like to know what other think about its authenticity.

Definitely tampered with. The L is lower then the J.

That looks like a hand stamped assy date or engine code. Gang stamps are pretty straight and even. This could be a converted 2-bolt block since no pics were shown of the oil filter area.

This block belongs to a member here. It was posted for sale here a couple weeks ago for $1800. He also listed a set of 840 heads here for $1200.

Well maybe Tommy can look for the Macro button on his camera. If it is real, a good pic would help....

Way off! Be wary of that one! No way original.

The numbers were/are a slip fit in the gang stamp unit and would not show any misalignment. Here in Canada at least, mistakes were stamped out with an "X" and re-stamped. This was reported to the Department of Transport or similar for any future references. I've seen this done with truck frames many years ago. I don't know what the policy is today but I can probably find out.

There is no debate. The stamping is original. Also has the original VIN number on the pad. Original broach marks are very evedint. Yes, the pics are terrible, but thats what I get for buying a crappy camera. I listed my contact information if you had any questions. Thanks for nothing.

One of these days I'll learn how to use that camera. Charley do you give lessons? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
