Do the 70 Nova broadcast sheets list motor codes...L-78, L-34, etc?

Very few, the build sheet might - if you can find one, but the broadcast sheets don't normally have the engine designation on them - that stopped after '69.

Unrelated to '70s, but the other day I was helping our buddy Johnny Cat move some parts to a Nova he got from us a while back...while loading the back seat parts I noticed a couple shreads of paper, and we got to looking harder, and found the majority of one of the sheets! Build sheets are found throughout the interior. Behind seats, under carpet... really anywhere... in the headliner, behind kick panels...

Ok boys here is the info I have: 70 build sheets(the one you find in the seat) don't list the engine. they may list trans(if it is manual on the floor). I have several examples of this.Column shift A/T cars have no trans listed..may have something to do with cutting the hole in the floor. Now for the Broadcast forms: there are 2, Chassis Broadcast copy and Body Broadcast Copy. the engine code is listed on the Chassis document. these documents cover all the codes for suspension, air cleaner, tires, battery cables, radiator hoses, etc. I have never seen any other L78 original Broadcast sheets in all my travels. Greg Roberts may have copies from other vehicles with diff. options. the Broadcast froms are very rare...

The '70 broadcast sheet for manual trans cars will show M20 to denote this, regardless as to whether it's an M20, M21 or M22 - it simply means manual trans. This will necessitate body changes like a hole in the trans tunnell for the shifter like TW says, but also an extra hole in the firewall for the different exit of the speedo cable and the related cover plate/screws for the already existing hole for the a/t speedo location.

Right on the money..I have 2 buildsheets that we found in my 70 black L78 car and they both have M-20 listed. The car, however was special ordered with an M-21. Curious if anyone else out there has any BB Broadcast sheets from their cars??

Thanks guys for all the info. I'm looking at a big block Nova that needs resto but the original motor is long gone. I was just wondering if there were any way to document what it was without orig. motor, protectoplate, etc. Some of the tell tale signs are there but alot of stuff can be changed over 35 years.

Looks like it. Says it has one 3/8" fuel line as well. Code 43 Citrus but painted black somewhere along the way.

Is the opening wide enough? I can't see if the core support hast he weld nut on the passenger side/front. Looks like it has a SB in it now, but has the BB heater box.

I'll try to attached the photo this afternoon which may make it easier to see? I'll have to reduce it. Should the weld nut be up towards the top of the passenger side? I'm far away from the car so this is all I have to go by. Photos suck!

Nova Broadcast sheet 101
There are two types of Build/Broadcast sheets for 1968 - 1970 Novas.
What I mean is that the build sheet that most people find before 71-72 model year are the Fisher Body build sheets. The GM build sheets were called Broadcast Sheets. The Fisher Body build sheets were probably called broadcast sheets too. Only us enthusiasts call them build sheets. The sheet on the link above is a Fisher Body build sheet. It was used by the Fisher Body side of the factory. This sheet was printed at the seat sub assembly area. They would pull a sheet off of the printer and build the seat according to the trim code box on the sheet. The sheet was tucked in to the seat springs to identify the seats after they were taken to the line. They were loaded on racks according to SEQuence number. The Sequence number was a daily run order the cars were in as they set on the line. If the car was still on the line at the end of the day that was OK. The sequence numbers were big enough to allow that. The sequence number was reset each morning. The Fisher Body line worker would have the cars running down the line. He would look at the sequence number crayoned on the body or the similar build sheet taped to the front of the firewall. He would grab the seat that matched the sequence number. Now, if the rack had all or several of the same trim type seats, the worker would not always grab the exact seat by sequence number. More than likely he just looked at the door panels and grabbed the seat the same trim type as the door panels. This style Fisher Body sheet was replaced by the punch card style that replaced the paper one late in the 1970 model year. This happened as Fisher Body was absorbed into General Motors Assembly Division in the 71-72 time frame. Build sheets used after the consolidation were a combined version of the Fisher Body and the two GM build sheets. The GM build sheets were called Broadcast Sheets. There were Body Broadcast Sheets and Chassis Broadcast Sheets. There are only a handfull of know copies of the Broadcast sheets used before the consolidation. Lanny Weatherford has one that he displays with his original car. See the May 1996 Edition of Nova Times. Lowmile has the only copy of the combined GMAD broadcast sheet that I have seen. After 1972 the Broadcast sheet changed to the black and white landscape 8.5 x 11 sheets. I have seen several of these with cars posted on ebay. Fisher Body sheets were used by the trim guys. So the sheet could be found under or behind any of the trim pieces. I.e. behind the door panels, the carpet, the head liner, the package tray, the dash pad. Even under the tar paper floor sound deadener. The likelihood of finding this sheet under the car or in the engine compartment is very slim. The very fact that they were in the interior and protected are why they have survived. The gas tank was a common place to place the GM broadcast sheets on FULL FRAME cars. This was a ready place to look to see what the chassis needed before it was mounted on the body. You will not find them there on Nova gas tanks except the Van Nuys built Novas after 1971. The RPO codes listed on the sheet are Only the codes that Fisher Body needed to build the body part of the car. They did not list every code the car had. It also listed the codes necessay to get the job done. If You ordered a console and a standard 3 speed. It would only list D55. If you did not have the console it would only list M20. It would not list anything that GM installed which did not need Fisher Body to prep the body. The Engine codes were dropped in the 1970 model year. If you are looking for proof of a 1970 Big Block car first look for the SS code ZL3. If it was not a SS car it was not a Big Block car. Note: Sequence numbers that were written in crayon and were cleaned off the car by the guy preping the car after it was received at the dealership. The same guy probably threw the GM Body and Chassis Broadcast sheets in the garbage. It was rare that he put these GM sheets in the glove box. The Nova Research Project is seeking copies of any and all broadcast sheets that you find in addition to the Trim tag and VIN information. |

We have found differences between these two weeks of cars that shows changes were incorporated at this time, ie; 06A and before cars have seat belt retractors, 06B and later do not. It is a day two car with bars and air shocks. Best of all it only has 7500 actual mi on it. It came with somthing that few have seen in many a moon. I has the original gas lines from the pump to the carb still intact. Most have been cut for a fuel filter or other use. (See pic)

I have a Original 1969 SS Nova Fisher Body sheet (the 5" x 8" seat spring type that the L48 took place of ZL3 on this particular sheet as it would designate a SS. My thoughts on the reason for these codes was for the tail light panel piercings for the rear panel. Never found a sheet on my 1970 L78 car, just confetti of it due to a different sized rat inside the interior. I also have a 1970 Nova 4 door Broadcast sheet from the Junkyard that does not show WILLOW RUN BODY BROADCAST COPY like the one earlier in this thread just BODY BROADCAST COPY.

Here's a picture of the sheet that was under the rear seat of a 1970 2 door 6 cyl glide car, E78-14 white stripe, full wheel covers, AM pushbutton, custom exterior, special interior group, green mist on green cloth. Punch card was in the glove box with the window sticker, POP and other related papers.

Fisher body codes were more specific than GM RPO's as they only were for a one of the components of a package. The hood and Grille were done on the GM side. Greg |

The "Willow Run" was added after the GMAD conversion (post Fisher Body) The earlier sheets just said "Body Broadcast Copy" or "Chassis Broadcast Copy". Any chance of getting a scan of the you 69 Fisher and the 4 Door GM sheets for the database? I put all them into the database for statistical anaylsis. When I bought my L34, the previous owner gave me the copy of the GM Canada shipping invoices which showed my car and it's options.

I too recv'd a few of these Microfishe copies back around 1990. . The cool thing is the other cars shown....you could pick out the options and run the Vin of something interesting! . They told me they had to stop giving these out as the key codes were included. . I think this is what they access when they search a requested Vin. . I wonder if you ask nicely, would they obscure the key codes and still send it? ~ Pete

I was luck enough to get in contact with a previous owner of my Deuce and he had removed these sheets from my cars seat. The reason he did not pass them down to the next owners is because the vin numbers did not match. The cool thing is that my car is a 05D car so they are from the same time as my car built.
Is it common to have two wrong ones in the same car? Marlin are Deuces 731 interior cars because that is what these are.
