Need help with 1970 Nova research
Hi everybody,
I'm using a new computer, so I don't have my bookmarks set. A good friend just bought a 1970 Nova SS L/78 in great condition. This was a southwest car and needs little body or interior work. The engine and transmission are gone, so I am trying to help him piece together the correct components. What is a good source for that information? I know that a new Nova site recently opened, can someone direct me to it? Also, is there a good book on these Nova's ( sort of like Jerry's Definitive 69 Z/28 & SS 396 Fact Book )? I'd like to get him started off on the right foot. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Thanks, Steve |

Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
I've got a fast question for everyone. The build date is the 3rd week of February 1970, but the rear has an assy. date of October 16th, 1969. This is four months before the build date of the car. How out of kilter is this according to the norms? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Steve http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...n0001-mods.jpg |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
It's unusual, but nothing to be overly concerned about.

Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
Hi Marlin,
Any idea as to why a rear assembly would be so far out of the build window? How were these components selected for assembly back in the day anyhow? Steve |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
Hi all !
Sorry for the delay in getting these posted. Here are some more images of the 1970 L/78 Nova project. I have a question about the rear axle code that I will post below. We'd like your input on this if possible. This is the condition the car was purchased in ( racing form ). https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Steve http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...ont%2Dview.jpg |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research

Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
Even more images.
The interior is sweet! Notice the hack-job on the console. ( It was so young, why-O-why https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif ) Steve http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...ont%2Dseat.jpg http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...ear%2Dseat.jpg |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
OK,
Here is the dilemma on the rear code. We're stumped and hope some of you have seen something like this before. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Steve The POP ( SEE PREVIOUS POST ) shows the rear code to be CBT 1016 G and the rear has the 1016 G portion of the code, but the ALPHA prefix is buggered-up and we can't figure out if this was a factory boo-boo or what. Any thoughts? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Steve http://webzoom.freewebs.com/nuch_ss3...ear%2Dcode.jpg |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
First: Cool car! I wouldn't be too concerned about the buggered stamp...probably just a bad day on the line....since the date matches the POP you are ok. Those axle stamps run the full spectrum from perfectly clear to so faint you can hardly see them. I have even seen stamps that were almost on the top of the tube..lots of variations on the same theme. Did you by chance check the casting no. on the housing and date?? Might help to ease your mind... What are your plans now for the car??? That interior color is really different..you don't see that everyday on an L78 car!

Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
Tom,
Plan is to restore this car back to as original as possible. That includes the original black cherry paint and SS hood. I will get this info on the rear housing casting & date and post that as well. Thanks for you continued help. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif Steve |
Re: Need help with 1970 Nova research
