Nickey Z-28 Sold
FYI: This Nickey Z-28 was recently sold to a private collector in Iowa. Wouldn't this be a great addition to SCR9? I love this color. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
Nice car. Were there any Nickey modifications made or was it sold as a stock Z-28 when new? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
Restored to stock appearance with Nickey mods: Doug's headers, Nickey Dyno-tuned kit, Nickey traction bars and Nickey tires/wheels. Those skinny, little traction bars that Nickey used are very wierd in appearance...but the real McCoy.
Nothing better than a Nickey modified Z-28 sitting among the cornfields of Iowa. Hee-haw ! ! ! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif |

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
Ron put a lot of work into that Z 28...this guy won't have it long. The only thing better than a Z 28 in the cornfield would be if you were there with it Lazy Dick !!! Yee Ha!

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
Is that Ron as in McHenry County Ron?
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
Yes, one and the same. Formerly known as the "Prez"...president of the now defunct U.R.C.C.; That's Uncle Ron's Camaro Club. He disbanded the club...I was the only member! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif
For that, you can bet when I start a club, he won't be invited. Having separate clubs and your own show(s) is the only way to fly.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif But I will invite the new owner of this Nickey Z-28. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif |

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold [/ QUOTE ] got an idea on what it sold for at all, also what engine did NICKEY drop into it, or was it a reg Z28 sold out of the NICKEY Dealership?? any pics of the invoices or any DOCs,(you dont see many with so little Nickey cars around and DANA cars as far as that goes) COWL tag/VIN numbers??? |
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
It was a Nickey Z/28 with some mods done in the shop I think...very nice car....and Lazy...don't fret...if you started a club you would be the only one in it...not even the new owner would join !

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
The car was local to Ron when he had his shop in McHenry. This guy started showing up at Ron's shop with rosewood wheels, mint exhaust manifolds, etc. It turns out the guy had the burgundy Nickey z, orange RSZ with white interior and the prototype crossram/hood from Wayne Guinn and a bunch of other stuff.
He liked the houndstooth interior so he added that to the burgandy z. The car had the original protect-o-plate showing Nickey as the selling dealer. One odd thing was that the car was missing the left framerail exhaust hanger plate. It looked like one was never welded to the frame from the factory. The car looks great done. Mark |
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
I would love to see more pics of this car. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif Does anybody know where the original owner lived?

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
70k??? I will take everyone available for that price. Im sure its at least double that for sure.
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
theres a guy on the Team camaro site that posted a pic of a 68 DANA RS/SS 350 car that was bid to 76K. both this one and that one overpriced for basic cars with minor tuning done to them. Now if they were 427 Cars, you could double that price real easy

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
A few years ago I bought a car from a fellow in SoCal. During negotiations he asked where in Canada I was from, I told him Calgary. It turned out that he was born and raised here and left in 1962. He pursued his dream of racing in SoCal.
It turned out that he ended up running the sports car department at Dana Chevrolet. His driving and mechanincal skills gave him an incredible career in drag racing for over three decades. Bring on those orange Dana cars! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif |
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
That 1969 Dana car didnt have doc's and the dealer selling the car doesnt have a good rep (tried selling a Gold COPO at Mecum last fall). With normal REAL NICE Z cars bringing 60k to 100k today I think a car small block car sold by Yenko, Nicky, Dana, Motion etc..WITH DOCUMENTS OR SOMETHING YOU COULD PROVE TO BE REAL, it would easily break into the low to mid 100k range and sell pretty fast too. IMO Personally I believe the Nickey in question could bring 200k to the right buyer..There just arent any REAL Nickeys available. And I know there are a few guys looking for them too.

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
The disc brake setup was replaced by drums for weight-saving/racing reasons. Here's the writeup from Kevin's website:
[ QUOTE ] The 1969 Nickey Camaro you see here started life as a Z28. It is one of only two Nickey Z28’s to become 427 Camaros. This Camaro -- optioned with an L88 aluminum head 427, a Muncie M22 4-speed, and radio/heater delete -- was heavily modified for the drag strip. It comes complete with all the typical high performance accessories of the day: headers, Mallory ignition, traction bars, heavy-duty clutch, scattershield, flex fan, gauges, Sun tach, Hurst shifter, Hurst shocks, and Goodyear slicks mounted on SS Cragars. Many weight saving modifications were made as well: removal of window track mechanisms, the exchange of drum brakes in place of the disc brakes, in addition to having the “heater delete” option. [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
My 69 Z-28 was a race car from day one and the power discs were replaced with drums. My 67 Yenko also was a drag car and the discs were replaced with drums. Very common change.

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
I dont know to each they're own but I would bet it would bring some good coin. I know I would have NO problem paying around $135k to $150k for a similar car with Docs and papers saying Nickey did some tweaking/HiPo work to the car. I bet at Mecum or Barrett this car would go well over 150k. And Id bet the farm it didnt sell anywhere near the 70k mark someone earlier quoted. Thats just my 2 cents maybe I pay to much though..

Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold

The disc brake setup was replaced by drums for weight-saving/racing reasons. [/ QUOTE ] How much weight could you really save by switching to manual drums? I've heard of old time racers doing this in the 60's as disc brake technology was fairly new and not entirely accepted as being "better," but I can hardly imagine the weight savings would offset the time/effort/expense of swapping from discs to drums. We're talking spindles, lines, master cylinder, backing plates, drums, shoes, the whole works here. There's got to be another reason why racers preferred drums. Any thoughts? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
You could also back of of the shoes so there was not as much drag as with the disc pads...so I heard https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
looking for a tenth or two with no drag of the discs.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
I was going to say that's there always some drag with disc brakes, compared to drum brakes.
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
There's also more rolling inertia or something like that just to get the wheels/tires/rotors moving. So it's a combination of weight savings, no drag and less effort needed to get the wheels moving.
|
Re: Nickey Z-28 Sold
In 1969 we used to load a spring on each caliper retaining bolt, positioned between the brake pads,to push the pads back upon brake release. The modification was worth 1 tenth and 2 m.p.h. in the quarter. It also stopped better repeatedly from over 120 m.p.h. than any drum brake car.

I'm quite sure they bought the Z/28 at a 'fair price' and didn't have to "bet the farm" to boot. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif |
