427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

I got a call from one of my friends that said in todays (Fri Feb 17th) Asbury Park Press Monmouth County New Jersey edition classifieds section of the Newspaper under antique autos a 69 Bladwin Nova was listed for sale. Said original 427 needs restoration has docs 25,000 obo. I will not be home until Sat to see the add myself but if anyone is interested I would check it out. It's outside my price range and I already have one of my dream cars so go for it.

Don't you think it's a bit late to be calling someone's home about a car. It's after 11 in New Jersey. If you called my house at that time of the night you probably wouldn't like what I had to say. I can understand that you would like to buy this car if its real but have a little respect for other people.

Well boys, if you snooze, you loose. Loaded the car up yesterday afternoon and made the long drive back to GA. Got the guy down to $23,500. Original bill of sale from Baldwin, L-88 engine, M-22, 4.88's and side exhaust. Clean car, not much rust, so it should be a pretty easy resto. Car is triple black with white stripes. Oh, yea, it is a 1970, not '69. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

OOPs, just realized it wasn't April 1st yet! The number is a cingular cell phone from N.J. w/out voice mail. Bet that sucker is ringing non-stop. Would be interesting to know if it turns out to be is a legit ad and not a joke or a scam. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...elairSucks.gif

My advice would be to pay for the car in full and take it with you.(assuming it is legit of course) There are going to be a lot of people trying to get this car first. Lots of stories of people thinking they had a car and then getting screwed. Good luck.

COPO...I was going to post last night after JFK took him to task that there are already people with airline tickets and satellite tracking and "I promise I will never sell it" stories so calling him late would be a good idea !!! In fact I'm sure there are people already trying to cut Enochs nuts off in whatever way they can dream up right now...good luck...hope its legit and hope you get it Enoch.

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

I passed the # and info off to enoch last night after he pm'd me. I just got back myself and have tried to call several times this morning getting the same voicemail message. The text of the ad read-

Nova SS 70 Baldwin Motion Car. Complete untouched orig. w/documents. 427 4spd, Deluxe interior. 33k orig mi., needs to be restored.

Hopefully someone who wants to restore it rather than make ht etidy profit will get it. Another car like that brought back to life would be great.

Its tough trying to buy a car with you guys online... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif. I too tried to reach this guy late last night and early this morning. By a stroke of luck I happened to get through on his cell phone and he said a guy from Iowa paid him an extra $25K to not answer the phone!!! Unbelievable! The car is black with white stinger, black guts and he has all the paper work, protectoplate, motion bill of sale, etc. etc. He said the car was in good shape, no rust and had just been sitting for 20 years. I've got to go now and bang my head against the wall! I'm depressed.

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Dont you think if a guy says he will wait for a guy to show up with a deposit at the asking price is how it should be instead of someone undercutting a already made deal. granted it might be for twice what was asked for but if the guy agreed to sell and take a deposit, it should be a done deal.

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Jeff- Pretty tough for an average Joe to turn down more than he was asking especially that kind of dough!

Not to mention, how many people would have shown up only to try and get him down off of his initial asking price. It ain't sold, 'til it's sold. Not to mention, what is the car WORTH? There have been many discussions regarding ethics on various topics on this board-- the least of which is grossly underpaying a seller only to turn HUGE profits in the end. Seems to me that someone just stepped up and gave a fair offer to ensure he could get a car in a long-distance deal. A guy has to do what a guy has to do to get what he wants.......

The days of "I'll be over at 5pm to give you the money for the car, consider it sold" went out the window once these cars became such a treasure. Now, a person will be getting twice what his top dollar was on the car. You can't argue with the ethics of either the seller or buyer in this case IMO. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Your right it would be hard to say no to a higher price, but if you have someone you told you would take his deposit esp after either driving a few hundred miles or flying in and then the guy gets there and hes told the car just left, thats just not right.

Oh well if Enoch doesnt end up with it I would be its a fast resto job and then sold within the year

Jeff H 02-18-2006 11:18 PM

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

I agree with you Jeff. It comes down to the seller's honor and integrity. I had a buyer flying in from WA state for my first JL8 car and I told him I would hold the car for him without a deposit. Then I had guys calling me and wanting to wire me cash to buy it on the spot. I told them "no" and the guy from WA bought the car. But it seems to be all about the money now. I bet if someone drove to the guy's house right now they could still undercut the deal and buy the car.

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Geez...Back off already. We have no idea if it was a done deal. How many times have I had someone tell me they are coming tomorrow, they no show and don't even bother to call and tell me. The decent thing would be for the seller to call the first guy and let him know not to come because someone else called and offered alot more. "A Bird in the Hand". We might find out tomorrow that someone else stepped up and paid the guy another 25K.

JeffH...What would you have done if you had promised to sell your car for 25K but before you ever get money you get told your car is worth 50K and you get offered that much ? Would you have still sold it for 25K ?

I would have started with contacting the person I told I was holding the car for. Since he had already booked a flight there was some cost involved for him so there's no way I could screw him over without reimbursing him. I've never flipped a car for a profit like most people do so I would stick to my word and honor the deal.

Zedder 02-18-2006 11:54 PM

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

The decent thing to do would be to keep one's word. If he made a deal at $25K and said he would hold the car until the following morning that is what he should have done (and I hope that is what he did). I sold one of my '67 Z's a number of years ago to a guy over the phone and he promised to snail mail me the deposit. I agreed and half an hour later someone else called me and offered $5K more. I stuck to my original deal and would expect someone to do the same for me. I know it's $5k and not $25K, and maybe that's enough to make some go back on their word, but the least he should do is offer the car to the first guy for the same as the subsequent offer.

Since none of us really know what transpired this is all just conjecture at this point anyway...

I say the big $$$ buyer shows up at the house to pick up the car and it turns out to be a Naldwin-Botion car. (As may may recall, this was the dealership down the street from Baldwin Motion that would take the big blocks out of hipo cars in the late 70's and install six cylinders and then sell the original motors for scrap) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Charley Lillard 02-19-2006 12:23 AM

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Jeff....You would still sell him the car for 25K even though he knows it is worth 50K ? If it were me I think I would have called the guy back and said sorry but I apparently made a big mistake when I assigned a price to the car. Even at 50K for this Nova it is going for half price if it is as described. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Re: 427 Baldwin Motion Nova For Sale

Does anyone know the seller's first name? Is his name Dan? If so, I may know a little about the car if it's the same car I'm thinking about. I don't remember if the one I'm thinking about is a 69 or a 70 but it is in New Jersey.
