Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Thanks Mike, what I am interested in is if the VIN derivative on the motor starts with "70L" or "0L". https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif Mark

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
I took a Quick Glance when I was over there today an the VIN Stamp looked like it was 10L. Butt that was just a Quick Glance. Will check again Tommorrow.

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Neat to see that both pics have big 7's in them.
|
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Thanks Mike.
Coincidentally, another Van Nuys Chevelle I came across today had big 7's on a Feb car. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Mark
I have the stamping from your old LS6 somewhere here. I know that that engine VIN started 0Lxxxxxx. It didnt start 70Lxxxxxx. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Thanks Mike, but I have a pic of it here. You're gettting old buddy...it did start with "70L" https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Can you post that pic of the CON VIN?
If it is a 7,that would've been a workers error and should've been 10L123456 stamped on the pad originally. 1=stands for Chevrolet division. 0=Model year. L=plant Van Nuys. 123456=last 6 of VIN# Is that a Van Nuys assembled Vehicle you're referring to,because a 7 stamped first indicates a GM of Canada assembled vehicle and they didn't build LS6's. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
mr70,
I was under that impression as well but since Mark has been looking we have come up with several Chevelles with the 70L including at least 2 LS-6's. Both stamps are identical. I am convinced that just when I think I have a handle on what is going on someone comes up with new information to prove otherwise. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Interesting..are they all Van Nuys built LS-6 Chevelles?
Exactly how many have been found this way so far? Can we see a close up pic of the stampings? |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
I'm pretty certain mine was 10Lxxxxxx. I don't have any pictures of the pad to confirm and the car was sold 4 years ago.

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Rick and I have both been surprised by this finding, but we'd still like to see a few more examples. When I had my Daytona Yellow LS6 I read that it should have the "0L" prefix instead of the "70L" prefix and because of that and some fairly deep broach marks, many thought it was a restamp. I felt confident that the stamp looked legit to me, but couldn't explain the "70L" or the deep broach marks. So I began looking for cars from the same build range and found examples of the broach marks quite often on untouched blocks. Then I found this new LS6 and it had both as well! I went looking again and found this fellow who responded to one of my Team Chevelle questions.... http://community.webshots.com/photo/...14073752wrRNgy
Click on his album and then on his tranny pic to see the VIN stamp. I won't post the LS6 pads because I am negotiating on one of them and the other belongs to another member here, so he can post it if he cares to. I definitely believe that the "70L" is correct and have yet to see the "0L" on a Chevelle...maybe a way for Van Nuys to differentiate Camaros from Chevelles??? |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Previous to this car and the DY car, I only remember ever seeing the "10Lxxxxxx on engine pads but am not starting to come across more of the "70L".
For now I agree, this car's VIN needs to be kept quiet until you have gotten all your ducks in a row. Could be quite a find. Rick |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Here's one from an L48 350 out of a 70 Chevelle. VIN sequence begins with "1L0..." That's different than what's been posted so far. And yes, this is a 70 engine as the CRE code was not used in 1971.
*Update - I just realized that this pic is from a 70 Monte Carlo that I took a while back. Maybe that explains the difference in the first three digits' sequence https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif http://www.shapeconsulting.com/cars/LAvinstamp.jpg |

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
I noticed the "MALIBU" plate on the drivers interior door panel on the red Van Nuys LS5. Appears to have been a shortage of the SS door badges across other plants also. Have seen a few on Atlanta built Chevelle SSs.

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
I went at looked my 70 Chevelle Original L-48. The Stamp is Definetly 10L 132771. That is a Original L-48 4 Bolt Steel Crank, 300 HP Chevelle Motor.

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Most plants used the "Malibu" door plaques as a general rule. Baltiore more commonly used the "SS" door plaques. This holds true only on the LS-5/LS-6 cars.

Rick [/ QUOTE ] Rick, Why would they use "MALIBU" plaques as a "general rule" when the "SS" was required (or did I miss something)? Also, why do you think this only applied to LS5/6s? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Always looking for education - thanks! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Begining in 1970,when the new RPO Z-15 454 Super Sport Chevelles & Elcaminos were assembled, they didn't have RPO B-22,(Door Emblem SS),listed seperately on their buildsheet orders. This was repeated throughout all assembly plants.
It was overlooked when they were upgraded from the base 396 RPO Z-25,which every 454 Chevelle had to start out as in the begining.Probably because on paper,RPO B-22 looked like a 396 specific ident, and not related to the 454's,so it was omitted in the translation. It was presumed later on they would know to include the "SS" door emblems on the 454 equipment upgrade, but the trim shop didn't recognize it,and continued to use the "Malibu" door panel emblems on the new LS-5/LS-6 454's. There is a TSB on this. The Monte Carlos ironically, did have RPO B-22 automatically included on their build orders, probably because they didn't have an RPO Z-25 coded cars to muddy up the waters. Also, some of the early built 1970 396 Chevelles were built with the incorrect 1969 design "SS396" door emblems. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
Oshawa Canada plant did code their 454 LS-5 Chevelles with B-22 "SS" door panel emblems on their special printed buildsheets.
There was at least one Baltimore 454 Chevelle coded with B-22 door emblems on its paper. Those are the only two examples I know of that were in the minority. |
Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?

Re: Van Nuys Chevelle engine pad stamp pic?
