It looks like the flea market special of the year! I guess it would go well with the non functional side pipes and the blower air cleaner bolted to the hood. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

For the same amount of money they could buy a used Olds 12 bolt.

I have one in my Cutlass. For sale to posers only. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Jeez, I've known guys to redrill 10 bolts to 12 bolts for YEARS! I actually did it the other way around in my 66 GTO.. 12 bolt with a 10 bolt cover...[actually kept the 12 bolt cover just filled the big whoop with bondo...and drilled new holes]

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

A fast https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/stupid.gif question if you please.

12-bolt rears actually refer the the number of bolts used to
affix the ring gear to the carrier - correct? Are the 10
bolt and 12 bolt housings the same size? Can a 12 bolt
carrier be installed in a 10 bolt rear? I wouldn't think
so. Can someone just clarify for me?

Jim, why would someone disguise a 12 bolt rear as a 10 bolt?
I'm lost on that one.....

Pontiac used 10-bolt rears. He probably wanted the stronger Chevy 12-bolt but wanted also to fool the under-car peekers.

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

You know, I don't want to bash the Pontiac's as I personally
like the 69 GTO & 70-73 Formula's, but what gives with
Pontiac? Ram Air IV with a Rochester carb, 10-bolt rear?
Did Pontiac know something the rest of the car makers didn't
or did they not know as much? At least the RA4 got an
aluminum intake... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

hmm...extra room in the valve covers??? are we smuglin drugs?...lol.. saw that on tv once.. guy had a car and was pullin in on a trailer... guts of theengine were cut out and it appeared to be a runing car... but the motor was full of heroin!

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

Pete..No and even though sounds like fun Super, ..no.

More hints...On the rear end, I made an 'un-original' 12 bolt look like an 'original' 10 bolt... Sooooooo.....[where are all the Pontiac guys??? They should know this!][Yes it's a clearence thing but be more SPECIFIC!!!]

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

Sorry in advance if this offends anyone here but the engine on drugs reminds me of a buddy's ideas on running a crankcase full of of all things, a woman's slippery substance....smegma is it?? . He claims it's the slipperiest substance known to man and combined with it's known high temperature capabilities makes consideration as a lubricant in high-rev engines worth further testing? . Anyone considering this would be advised to exersize extreme caution as it's well known that exposure to these substances is highly hazardous to the average North American Male.....somehow a seemingly normal fella loses the ability to think straight and throws all concerns for personal safety aside when working with these materials?? .

Schmegma! This thread just got really interesting!

Jim: Nitrous? Bigger stamped steel rocker arms? Uhhh...three more carbs? Wangers' hairpiece?

I believe I've read some post's by some car dealers on here that would give that a run for it's money....on being the worlds most slippery substance that is...

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

Further to the above, testing of these as experimental lubricants in engines with consumption problems or two stroke motors should be avoided. . The resulting emissions could cause crowd panic and or a loss of the natural competitive spirit while racing....some fellas could become content to place a close second behind the vehicle emmiting the dangerous fumes?? . Also not recomended is blending of these materials....previous testing has shown males experimenting with more than one type of these substances at a time as highly dangerous!

Hey Jim, are you really considering a Dana in your Mk.1V Nova transplant....then what? .

~ Pete

Jim Ferron 03-31-2006 10:09 PM

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

Actually my buddy has the Dana in his Nova...I thought it was worth like $800...he thinks it's worth $1300. It has a spool in it so I'll have the added expense of a posi unit..so I figure 'screw that',I'd have close to $1800 in it...now I'm looking for a 12 bolt.[real one!]

4:11 would be nice. I've a rock crusher in the attic for 30 years.. and I'll build a 496 [454 w/.250 stroke +.060 bore] or a 540 if I can find a used block ['cause I'm thrifty!].
I have a set of ZL-1 heads..dog dishes / Cragar SS maybe Redlines...rubber mat..so it would look day 2...

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

Jim, sounds great on all of the above! . Any Chevy post car w/ an L89 stick and dog dish caps is sano-wicked! . I sure hope you're keeping the bench? . Care to try a crankcase full of that dangerous lubricant? .

Re: 12 bolt shoppers beware !!!!!!

OK Here's the answer...Pontiacs had two styles of valves covers...the 389 style, '66 and older, you know the ones, they didn't have squared shoulders, they fit 326-389-421...and 67 and newer style that fit 350-400-428-455.

They both had the same bolt pattern but the 66 and older sat about an 1/8 lower on the head.

If you put a 389 valve cover on a 455 engine the rockers just hit in the sections of the valve covers that aren't 'squared' off. An extra set of gasket cures that ill. So plenty of 65 and 66 GTO's have 455 engines in 'em and you'd never know except look for two sets of valve cover gaskets...[or now I guess everbody just memorizes the casting numbers]
