Has anyone seen a Hugger Orange '70 SS-396?

I've also posted this on the Team Chevelles message board, and one of the members suggested I do it here, as well. I'm trying to track down a '70 Chevelle SS-396 that my parents purchased new in 1970 (and sold in 1972). The only records I have is a dealer price quote and a service receipt, which fortunately shows the VIN number. It's either 136370B165352 or 136370B105352. I can't be certain because one of the sixes looks like a zero.

The car was ordered with Hugger Orange paint and white racing stripes, 396 engine (not such which one), Super Sport package, cowl induction, Posi, power steering, and air conditioning.

My mom's been talking about this car for a long time now and trying to find it has really piqued my interest. We're in the Pittsburgh, PA area so it might still be nearby. Has anyone seen a car like this?

(The Camaro on the trailer was drag raced by my dad in the early '70s. We still have that one!)

Haha, yeah... bought new in '67 with the RS/SS package and 396/325 engine. Fairly rare, from what I understand. My dad started racing with the 396 but eventually swapped it out for an aluminum 427 (ZL1) with tunnel ram, dual electric fuel pumps, etc. The car received a drag racing suspension, full roll cage, and Dana rear axle. All told, it was putting down mid-10's in the quarter mile, and that was with four-speed.

By the late 1970s he was getting out of drag racing and decided to sell the engine (yes, I know), installing a 350 in its place. I'm currently working on swapping a 396 back in and getting the car running again. It still has the original paint (sans decals) with 14,000 miles on the odometer.

Hey Andy, welcome to the site. When I met my wife she was living in Murrysville on Himalaya Drive in the Shangrala development. She graduated from Gateway High. I have lived in Oakland, Shadyside (wrong side of the tracks), and Squirrel Hill. If your family's Chevelle came from the factory with A/C it was the 396/350HP version. Terrific vintage photos. Thanks! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Thanks for the engine clarification, mockingbird812. This one must have had the 350 hp L34. That's neat that your wife lived around here... we're right on the border of Westmoreland and Allegheny county, near the 286/380 junction. I'm actually a Pitt student and fight that Oakland/parkway traffic nearly every day. I'm on summer break now and I sure don't miss it! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

mr70, I'll answer your questions on both forums so I get better coverage. The car was an automatic and purchased from Bauman Chevrolet in Wilkinsburg, PA. That dealership doesn't exist anymore but the main phone line now runs to Centennial Chevrolet. I called them a few days ago, but they denied ever having ties to Bauman, so I'm not sure what that means. The signing date on the quote/delivery slip was February 9, 1970 and the salesman was John Deveraux, Jr. I didn't know that about the paint naming differences, but the paper actually lists "special paint - Hugger Orange" under the Remarks section.

Thanks again for all of the help and interest. It really means a lot to me.

Chevelle VIN#B105352 shows up in the Baltimore records as being built in mid September,1969.
Chevelle VIN#B165352 shows up in the Baltimore records as beng built in mid March,1970.
Is that February 9th date the actual day it was delivered,
making it a September build,or was it a price estimate quote,
making it delivered a few weeks later and more then likely the March build?

I grew up in Shaler and am living in Gibsonia now. I have an 85 ROC. I always liked the third gen Z's. Good luck in your search. Does John Deveraux Jr. have anything to do with Deveraux Chevrolet? I think they are gone now too though. There is a Deveraux Motor sales in Freeport, PA. It might be worth a phone call.

Very cool pics of the Chevelle towing the Camaro. Who was the original dealer for the Camaro? Was the original color black or one of the other dark colors? It's a little hard to tell. I wish you good luck in find the Chevelle. It would be neat to get them both together again.

Re: Has anyone seen a Hugger Orange '70 SS-396?

mr70, I looked closer at the record I have and it's actually a factory order written on a generic dealership sales order. It doesn't have RPO codes or anything, but "Factory Order" is written (very lightly) in the upper corner. My mom also recalls this being the order slip they gave to the dealer, so Bauman Chevrolet must have completed the formal order on their own. Knowing this, the February 9, 1970 signing probably indicates a March, 1970 factory build... so the VIN is B165352. Cool!

GaryH, I have an uncle in Gibsonia (about two miles back from the Route 8 Turnpike entrance). I'm not sure if Deveraux Chevrolet is linked to our Chevelle salesman or not. He was apparently a pretty young guy (very early twenties) when he sold the Chevelle to my parents, so it's possible that he could have made a life of it. I wonder if they'd have any records...

1967Z28, the '67 Camaro was purchased from Marhefka Chevrolet in Windber, PA. The color is actually Royal Plum, a dark (almost blackish) purple.

The chevy dealer in Windber is still there, it is called Gap chevrolet ( the original dealer sold Roger Ausleys red LS-6). What race track did they race at ?. I live 2 miles before the old Keystone Raceway in New Alexandria,Pa.

Interesting, I didn't know that about the Windber dealership. My dad raced at a bunch of tracks, Keystone being one of them. He also frequented the old Pittsburgh International Dragway (PID) and National Trail Raceway in Columbus, OH.

I've had my IROC up to Keystone (or should I say "Pittsburgh Raceway Park," haha) a few times over the past few years. They really did the place up nice.

Thanks for the info on the Camaro. That is really a very cool car. I found this picture of Bobby Marhefka in a 409 powered modified on the Jennerstown Speedway website. Gotta love those W motors. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif
