L78 Project Pics

Here's some before and after pics of the engine compartment in my L78 Camaro, which I'm detailing for my latest project.

My goal is to have a nice looking original engine while minimizing downtime -- this is a 'driver' after all.

I had to find a carb (thanks Eric), smog system (thanks Jerry), and NOS block heater (thanks mr70). Lots and lots of other little details that I wouldn't even know about without reference pics from members here (thanks jeff and paul).

(Let me know if something grossly wrong jumps out at you)

Parts I collected up front:

Not bad for a middle aged white guy. Must be alot better working in a garage that does'nt need heat. Roger

I like what you've done bubbles.
The one thing that really stands out to me is the gold ir. Alt. pulley.
That's definitely later GM and not indicative of an engine with overspray on the Ex. Manifolds.Aim for a zinc.
Please tell us you're putting a Delco R-59 in it too. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

The Chevelle may have to make a trip over there before too long...

Hey Dennis, under the hood looks great. How does the rest of the car look? Do I smell a survivor?

Not a survivor but undergoing a 'sympathetic' restoration to look like one. So, thank you.

Car has original trunk and floors, got new GM sheet metal in 1990-91 then did the auction route for almost 15 years until I bought her at Barrett-Jackson last January. GM of Canada documented real Hugger Orange L78.

This is after putting back SS hood and dogdish wheels, painting trunk, adding a couple door panels, and removing wheel well and roofline stainless:

Looking good. Are you going to remove the rear louvers? They look a little out of place without the rest of the trim. But it sure would make for a bit more work to fill in and touch up the paint. Did the car come with the plan hub caps according to the GM of Canada docs?

the engine bay didnt look that bad, typical painter dust.

car thumps real nice like a L-78 should, in the 30 mins we drove to the trailer everyone turned when they heard it and gave the thumbs up even the nice officer we pulled up to after checking the secondaries out.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Jeff:

Car is coded X66 so louvers are correct by my reckoning.

Yep, those are the correct wheels per the GM docs.

I was hung up yesterday with one of the power steering brackets that I couldn't quite make fit. Then last night I checked the docs again and no mention of power steering. Argh.

Anyone know where I can find a manual steering gearbox for a 2D-built Norwood SS 396?

Actually, the X66 is the base model SS396 so it probably shouldn't have the louvers since they were part of the Z21 trim group. They might be part of the SS package though, I couldn't tell for sure over at CRG.

Jeff, visit camaros.org: Model ID and Numbers decoding - Camaro FAQ and search for the table entitled "Body Trim and Paint Features of the 1969 X Codes". SS396 X66 w/out Z21 or Z22 is shown as having black body sill, blacked-out tailpan, and rear quarter louvers; and not having driprail and wheel opening moldings.

camarojoe 11-17-2006 04:27 AM

Re: L78 Project Pics

Yep, the quarter louver trim is correct for all SS Camaros... even without style trim. The X66 Yenko cars also had this trim.

Re: L78 Project Pics

I thought that was the situation. I couldn't find it when I did a quick search earlier. It's pretty cool having the GM of Canada docs showing every option the car was built with!

Cool! What dealership did it come from? About a decade ago there was an original hugger orange with white interior L78 like that in Calgary. Wonder if its the car?

Helmut, it's probably the same car. Les Long--Oriental guy, goes through a lot of nice cars--found the car out East in the late 80s and brought it back to Alberta for restoration. Restored in 1990-91 (ie hoses, brake lines, clamps etc all dated 90 or 91) then went thru a handful of owners around Calgary (one guy owned it twice) then came to Arizona for auction probably 1994-95 or so.

Reason I think it's the same car is the same reason I bought it -- you just don't see those cars very often.

Met another guy from Calgary earlier today. Forgot his name already. Nice guy, brought down his yellow COPO Chevelle for the Goodguys show. Super nice car with Canadian docs, restored to world-class levels. Calgary really seems to a hot spot for car guys.

Thanks but if you think I got a deal, then the blue L78 for sale in the classifieds here on this site is a screaming bargain.

I'll consider selling mine in a year, maybe. We're planning a cross-country RV trip next Summer and the L78 is the car we're towing behind.

I agree with you Denis! I thought it would have been sold by noon today https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif If I didn't have another iron in the fire, it would have been mine!
