Got a new musclecar
1 Attachment(s)
It's either a musclecar or a sportscar depending on your perspective. I just picked up a '72 Corvette "survivor" coupe. It's in great original shape with the following options:
LS5 454 Born with engine 4 speed transmission (M20 I think) Power Steering Power Brakes Am/Fm Radio Tilt/Telescope steering wheel Custom Leather Interior Factory Air Custom Wheel Covers Power Windows Rear Defroster I just drove it home in 18 degree weather this morning. I had the car up to 90 MPH at one point. It has 56K miles and runs, drives and looks great. I have the original invoice, registrations, etc. It's black on black. For you 'Vette experts, although black wasn't offered in '72 as a factory hue, this car was painted in black on delivery in 1972. I am psyched to be owning my first 'Vette. Here are some pics taken in the seller's garage--sorry for the poor quality--I'll post more when the weather improves and I get the car outside. |
Re: Got a new musclecar
Thats badass. What is the quater mile times on those things from 72 ?

Re: Got a new musclecar
Nice ride my man!
I dig those sharks... drive nice too... what rear? |
Re: Got a new musclecar
I love those Vettes. I was the first person to ride in my uncles 74 on the way home from the dealer. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I was 5 years old.

Re: Got a new musclecar
The car actually goes pretty good. I don't know 1/4 mile times, and the horsepower rating is 270 NET (as opposed to gross). However, the torque on the car is 455 FT/LBS, which is good stuff. No substitute for cubic inches! Handling on the car is quite good for a 35 year old piece.
Thanks for your compliments. As soon as I find a picture reducing software I'll post more pics. Thanks, Morris |
Re: Got a new musclecar
The "New" photobucket automatically reduces the picture sizes for you (That reminds me...I'm going to have to update my tutorial). You can choose from a number of sizes for display now.
Just get a free photobucket account and load up your pics....PM me if you have any problems! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Re: Got a new musclecar
Very cool...congrats! I've owned 4 survivor '72's over the years and they are one of my favorites. In '96 I bought a 29,000 mile untouched LS5 4 speed car and drove it almost 1,000 miles home from MO https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif It was a great car!!! BTW, I'm sure you know this, but under those hub caps is a set of rally wheels so you can run the rings and caps for a different look at times https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif Best of luck with the car!

Re: Got a new musclecar
Dan,
I'm not 100% certain as to the rear. Given that it's a 4 speed car with air, it's either 3.08 or 3.36, right. The invoice doesn't show an upcharge for the rear end, so it's whatever would be standard setup. It certainly appears to be original, as the whole rest of the car does as well. Only the fuel pump was changed and I have the original in a box. Zedder--good call on the wheels. The caps look great but they weigh a ton. The owner had a spare set which he gave me and the box was unbelievably heavy.... |

Re: Got a new musclecar
------Very nice!!! What color was the car before the dealer repainted it??? I ask only because a used car dealer I worked for during that era was ordering new Corvettes in primer and painting them black upon arrival. Out of probably 5 Vettes ordered he never had the foresight to order the 454. Never could understand that.........Bill S

Re: Got a new musclecar
Thanks Bill. The car is coded as a "Classic White" or paint code 972. I will tell you, though that the car is black through and through, underneath, inside, outside, etc. There is even china marker from the factory or the dealer on the backside of the hood. Even the blue VIN sticker is still adhered to the driver-side door. I'm the fourth owner, and the second owner (who bought the car in '75 from the original owner) swears that they pulled up to the dealership and the car was black when they took delivery. Because black wasn't offered for a few years, the dealers and the factory got inventive in satisfying the large contingent that still wanted a black car. This car also has the code 404 Black Deluxe Leather Interior trim. You're certainly right about the relative rarity of the LS5 454--out of a total of 20,500 coupes made that year, only 3,089 had the 454 according to the NCRS Corvette Spec Guide.

Re: Got a new musclecar
Very pretty car, I love the PO2 wheel covers. Don't drop one on your foot while removing it, you'll bust a bone.
The torque is amazing, up hill and down hill is all the same. We have a steep, steep hill by my house and I used to hammer my '73 454 while going up the hill. It would just tear it up like the road was flat. |
Re: Got a new musclecar
Very nice....Congrats.
I almost bought the same car in 1985. Dan. |
Re: Got a new musclecar
In case anyone is interested, I got the car home to my garage and posted a few more detail shots. Notice in one of the pics you can see the 1978 inspection sticker still in place on the windshield. My youngest got into the act as well since she considers this HER car...notice the car still isn't going to win any awards for cleanliness--it's still too cold around here to be washing cars....

Re: Got a new musclecar
Paint it Daytona yellow and it would look a lot like my '70 LT-1, including the heavy wire hubcaps.
