9 inch or Dana 60 ?
Considering building a sort of "pro touring" style car out of my 69 RS.Wondering what rear end to use between a Dana 60 and a 9 inch Ford. You see the 9 inch used all the time and occasionally the Dana.Does one have a advantage or disadvantage over the other and exactly what if so? Thanks in advance

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
I would run the 9". Easy to change pumpkins and I think the Dana 60 is a bigger, heavier unit that takes more hp to turn it.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
I agree. The Dana is a heavy piece.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
Concur with Charley. Dana 60s are nearly indestructible tho.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
A ford part will slow your gm down, a mopar part will make it faster. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif....... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/haha.gif Seriously though, I've got a 4.10 dana 60 in my 'Cuda and I must say, it is definately without a doubt one tough s.o.b. It laughs at 6K clutch dumps. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif I would run a dana 60.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
I agree with the above posts, but if you're not going to be changing gears, and want a bullet proof setup, I would go with a properly built Dana 60. You won't kill it.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
A Pro-touring style car won't hook up to where he would ever need a Dana though. I have two cars with 6 speed and 389 geared 9" rears and they have been fine.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
Darn it guys knock it off,you gonna make me flip a coin!

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
No experience with a pro touring set up but years ago ran both set ups in a 70 chevy 454 ls6 mud bogger. Bottom line I could break the 9 inch and did many times but could not break the dana.If it took extra HP to drive it I never noticed.
Dana looks better also and gets more conversation especially from the hemi guys trying to figure out what it was out of. Take care |
Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
As much as I loathe quoting magazine articles...
A few years ago Steve Magnante (sp?) did a back-to-back test between a Dana 60 and a Chrysler 8 3/4 rear end (very similar to a 9" Ford) in a Dart with, if memory serves correct, a 528 crate Hemi. (I searched the HRM and CC sites for the article but came up dry) Anyhow...long story, short version; despite the fact that the Dana was considerably heavier than the 8 3/4", track testing showed no significant difference in e.t., although I believe the article stated that the car was much more stable down-track, which the author credited towards a better posi unit in the Dana. IMO, in a Pro-Touring build, I would use a 9" and not lose a moments sleep over it. For a serious drag car, I'll say this...I've seen a lot of broken 9" Fords, but I can count on one hand the number of broken Dana 60's I've seen. FWIW, YMMV. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif Eric |

My old 427 Nova had a ford 9" 500HP left the line at 5,500 with a trannie break and never hurt it in 10 years. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif 14.00 by 32 slicks

The old bogger was a shade over 500 Hp and she would eat them even after we did the upgrades. We are talking spinning 18.5 wide by 44 tires also with lockers in the front and rear. Something will break eventually. |
Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
The car had a mini spool in it for years And ford N case. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
I ran 5:67 gears in the 1/8 mile tracks and 4:88 in the 1/4 mile tracks.

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
The pin came loose in the mini spool hit bottom of case BOOM. I went to MW spool and 31 spline axles then. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
We ran a 9" in our Super Gas car for years, without ever having a failure. The car weighed 3,750lbs and put out 1,000hp on the motor. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif
Just don't skimp when it comes to gears, axles, bearings, etc... when it comes to building it. Blair |
Re: 9 inch or Dana 60 ?
for a pro-touring car, a good 10bolt or 12bolt would be fine.
9" or dana for high horse power / heavy car. --------- Dana 60, 557 gears, 14.5x32's ,3700lb car, same rear for over 20 years.. and a few thousand 1/4 mile passes. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif launch1 http://www.dragracers.org/atco1994/005.jpg Launch1 video Launch2 http://www.dragracers.org/atco1994/001.jpg Launch2 video |
