Funny, the "fuel economy" on that VW is better then the "fuel" VW of today. I know mine never got anywhere near that.

Re: 1970 4-cylinder Nova

That test shows a little over 30 MPG. Impressive. But I'd have to say that car would have to really be a pig. Wouldn't belong in the fast lane on the highway for any reason. People don't realize that for several years, Novas were one of the only cars ever made with the choice of 4,6, or 8 cylinders. You could even break down the V8's into small and big blocks making for 4 distinctly different engine families available!

I have visions of a older midget Sesco 4 cylinder engine in this thing. Did anybody notice the distance between the fixed fan and radiator? Why bother putting a fan on the car?

I can only wish it was 4.00. $5.47 this morning for regular. I even notice it now using the snow blower. Yes our gallon is different but even when we compare the same volume is is way over 4.00 https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Wilma,

My first car was a 69 Nova, 250/2 SPD. I rebuilt the carb and got 22 MPG highway and around 18 in the city.

Re: 1970 4-cylinder Nova

From one of the questions in the listing, there's a fan shroud that's not installed, which explains the apparent distance between the fan and radiator. Not sure about the mag wheels though - if there was ever a Nova that deserved to have dog dishes that's the one.

The car in the article was a three speed manual, but the Ebay one is an automatic (Powerglide?) - uphill grades or headwinds might be an adventure. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

More than likely that Automatic is a "Torque Drive" transmission which is an automatic but has to be shifted from low to high and back to low. Torque Drive trans is a 2 speed but not the typical Powerglide. They were installed in 4 cylinder and alot of 6 cylinder Novas.

I had a 1970 Nova with a 6 and the Torque Drive trans years ago....1982. From what I remember it was in high gear all the time. I don't ever remember it shifting unless I did it manually. I put a T-350 in it and the little 6 came alive. The trans had a shift kit in it and it would get 2nd. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif I think it had some good gears in it also...3:55 maybe? 'Cause it would go through the gears pretty quick. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 1970 4-cylinder Nova

I used to look carefully at the six banger Novas when I was fixing smashed cars as front end collisions often drove the back side of the waterpump shaft into cyl. #1 thus killing the engines...the shorter V8's always lived through the accidents no problem!.
Sometimes it'd happen on other cars too but the Novas seemed the worst as relatively minor hits straight on the front often resulted in the problem..

Re: 1970 4-cylinder Nova

Don't know if most of you are aware or not, but there were no 4 cylinder Chevy IIs/Novas produced by GM Canada after 1965. Even after production moved to the U.S. in 1968, none of the 4 cylinder cars were exported for sale in Canada. This also applied to Acadians.
