Found: 66 SS 396 Chevelle

Was visiting family in PA this week, and my brother-in-law took me to see a 66 SS he is contemplating purchasing.

It's a 138 code car, with the paint code: M-M.

It's a 4 spd with a small block now, and I am trying to get the rest of the cowl tag.

Not a supercar, but still pretty cool.

Does anyone know what that paint code is?

OK, figured it out, Aztec Bronze.

So, how do I figure out what engine this car came with, along with options? Is the build sheet pretty much the only thing I can look for?

Paperwork is all gone, but the interior seems to be relatively in-tact.

Yes, unless you're fortunate enough to have a car that was either built in or sold new in Canada. I'm not sure if they were building 66 Chevelles in Canada, though https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

2L = 4spd
4F = conv. package ( lights/rt side mirror?)
Paint MM = Aztec bronze https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Re: Found: 66 SS 396 Chevelle

If the Vin is correct it is for a 4 door 66 Chevelle.

You know, that is what I thought. He must have gotten that number wrong, because it should be a 138 like the Trim Tag, right?

some chevelles may have a 138 TT but a 137 vin (not '69's)

have him check that trim code also.

Re: Found: 66 SS 396 Chevelle

Well, talked to my b-i-l tonight, and he thinks the VIN tag may have been changed. I guess the guy who inherited it said it has "SDN" on the title.

Are there hidden VINs on 66 Chevelles?

If so, where?

BBIGG BLOCK 396 05-02-2008 12:10 AM

Re: Found: 66 SS 396 Chevelle

There is one on the top of the frame at the rear wheel area,pull the rear wheel on the driver side,take a mirror with a handle and you should be able to see it.You may have to clean dust or dirt off but there should be one there.Not sure as far as the body goes but I bet there are somewhere. I had someone tell me before on the inside lip of the trunk on the driver side under the rubber gasket there is one but I never seen one there. Says it is stamped in the metal in the groove about 1 foot from the top edge right in the groove!

Anyone else know of hidden VINs?

Re: Found: 66 SS 396 Chevelle

No hidden vins on 66's except the partial vin on the frame mentioned above. That's pretty much impossible to see when the car is on the frame. There would also be a partial vin on the tranny case...usually on the top. Again, hard to see with the trans in the car. Good luck!
