I have some information to add to the discussion.
My 70 had just a trace of paint on the straps not heavy OS like Jack's car did neither did my 1973. During the interviews for the book I asked specifically about the Fisher element of attaching the gas tank straps.
Exhibit #A for discussion was Jack's painted straps. First supervisor stated "looks like a third shift car to me-sloppy" The other superintendent stated "that looks to be no strap tape to me"
'The coach was suspended from hangers in paint and if the straps were free hanging there was a risk of damage to the strap as well as the coach-and even a tripping hazard if the strap was bent all the way around the rear outer lip of the lower body pan at the rear for the painters trimming out the body'. The front of the strap was to be secured with tape.
Fisher and Chevrolet were competing divisions during this period and quality gaffes like this had the potential to result in Chevrolet charge backs against Fisher Body.
Make no mistake this happened, but we need to be careful not to normalize a defective quality practice. Restore your car as it was built, that way you are never wrong.
