I shouldn’t have watched that

I watched the Air Disasters Cable Show on this crash. Very sad and all because of the way they reinstalled the engine not in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

When I was in college I had a part time job doing line service on corporate jets. I worked around the mechanics all the time and I remember the first time I saw them installing safety wire on nuts/bolts on the engine pieces. Having worked on cars and not being used to seeing this, I said something to the mechanics about it and they said you don't want to loose engine parts at 30,000 feet. Makes sense I thought... LOL

I was back home in Chicago after graduation from college. We lived five miles from the airport when that DC10 went down. I read the list of casualties in the Tribune and my friend and coswimmer at University of Wisconsin that I just said goodbye to a few days earlier was listed as he was flying home to San Pedro, CA. I didn't find out until years later it was his father, also named David Coughlin.

This video@ the 2:05 mark shows a very graphic reason how this happened..
