Another of those unforgettable moments in life....I had just graduated from high school the month before, and I can remember sitting on our family room sofa with my dad (who would be dead 17 months later [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif[/img] ) watching the TV coverage of that momentous event.

I remember my dad wanting to get our first color TV...and my mom kept saying NO! We were living in Palatine at the time and finally my mom relented...and we got it so we could watch the moon landing and moon walks.

My mom was sooo angry when all of the moon stuff televised was in black and white. She thought the TV was a waste of money [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif[/img]

&quot;Neil Armstrong&quot; is the name that will be uttered for many, many generation to come and his name will always represent the massive team effort that the Apollo missions were. The Apollo moon missions were mankind's greatest achievement and he was the human being that we all dreamed of being when he stepped off that ladder. It saddens me to think of a day in the near future when every Apollo astronaut is gone and we will no longer have any living humans that have had the privelige of walking on another celestial body.

Nice guy, met him at Dryden Flight Research Center which is co-located on Edwards AFB Ca when I worked as a contractor for NASA in the mid 90's
got to meet a few of the older NASA guys as well as some of the new guys/gals going through training. Got to see some neat research vehicles as well.. Where else can a person get to get time in a simulator that other governments pay $$$$$, free :P

I remember watching the TV coverage with my grandfather. He was totally blown away by the event. And it didn't hit me until years later I was watching history unfold before my very eyes.

It's boggles my mind to imagine the courage it must have taken to commit to this mission.

My father worked afor a division of Thiokol in a machine shop that made rockets and rocket parts for NASA back in the 60's and 70's. I'll never foreget him taking me into the back room and showing me some of the smaller rockets that were still there..and even the jet pack suit. I still have a letter signed by Gus Grissom thanking his company for thier zero tolerance for error status..and wishing them to keep up the good work for the next mission. Unfortunately, the next mission was tragic and the astronauts died on the launch pad. I cannot imagine the courage of those astronauts after some of the prior tragedies. God Bless Mr Armstrong and God Bless America !!!

Hey Jeff,

Were you there in '92? I spent the year on South Base but the food at the local AFEES facility was 100% grease/fat, so we used to eat lunch frequently at the NASA cafeteria, which took 15 minutes drive time each way. Ran into John Perry there frequently, if you worked with him, long time test guy, I'm more into the weapons systems side. He has since retired and is not doing so well health-wise.

Neil was on the company payroll at some capacity for years, and I'll bet he got quite a bit of email from Neita who works at my facility. She was next to him in Outlook.Not sure what he did for us, probably on the board of directors.
