'70 Challenger rear end vin stamping?

Is the vin stamped on the rear end of a 1970 Challenger? I searched all over mine and can't find one but I thought there was supposed to be one.

Thanks, Jim

No VIN stamping on the rear axle. The dana 60 will have one or two date codes and a bill of material stamping number(body designation, axle ratio) Not sure what stampings (if any) are on the 8 3/4". Here is a link to some dana 60 info.

I appreciate the info. I coulda swore there was a vin stamp there when I bought the car but I couldn't find it now.

For what it's worth; Many years ago a very knowledgeable friend of mine showed me all of the partial VIN stampings on a car (70 Challenger) that we were gutting. He showed me the following locations
1) radiator core support
2) the cowl stamping
3) the driver's side deck lid drip edge.
When you opened the trunk and pushed the weather stripping over some, you could clearly make out a partial VIN derivative. I don't know what the build date, sequence, or plant of origin was, but I did see a number. From what I remember, all the big Mopar gurus say this stamping never existed, and that one car was the only time I've ever seen it.

I could be wrong as I am not up on Chrylser details, but I think the driver side deck lid drip edge stamping you are referring to is actually the generic bodystyle callout number for the rear 1/4's application..Not a unique CON VIN.(Confidential Vehicle Identification Number which is a derivative of the full VIN as listed on the title.)
GM vehicles did this too,as my Chevelle hardtop has 13637 stamped in bothsides of the rear 1/4 weatherstipping/trunk drip edges, followed by a two character panel production date.

You are correct in thinking that you are wrong. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Chrysler did place the C-vin on the rear trunk weatherstrip flange. I have found them on all my cars over the years. They are rather hard to read from the bottom side so you usually need to peal the weatherstrip away to see the topside stamping.

That's pretty thorough thinking of Chrysler.
So when these cars are restored,do restorers go the extra mile and re-stamp the hosts car CON VIN on their newly replaced,(if need be),1/4 panel?..and is that accepted as ethical?..not to mention legal?

Re: '70 Challenger rear end vin stamping?

Restamping would be both unethical and illegal. Usually if the entire quarter is replaced at the factory mounting points, I imagine that the section of the trunk weatherstrip flange that has the CVIN on it is sectioned in and/or left on the car and the quarter is fitted to it. On some cars the flange area is actually a separate small panel that is tack welded to the quarter.

Steve, so your saying that there IS a partial VIN stamped from the plant in that location? Assuming the car hasn't been hit the ass and then repaired? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/confused.gif
