<font color="green">"The car is Yenko # 8016, and, sold new at Jay Kline Chevy to Bob Krueger. In a letter, he explained how he went to the dealership in late '68, and, had a choice of two Rallye Green, and, two "light blue", Yenkos. After test rides, he chose this car, and proceeded to street race it extensively in the Minneapolis area. He claims he was "never beaten", and, the only car that came close was a '70 Hemi Cuda that he raced on I 35, all the way up to 130 MPH. He sold the car to his brother who removed the stripes, and, Yenko badges, but, left the SS 427 emblems that Bob had installed when the car was new. His brother installed dual Holleys on a tunnel ram, and, "Grumpy lump" style hood. At that point the car was raced only on the track. Some years later, mnyenko [Earl] on this site, discovered the car sitting outside a body shop, but, was unable to come to terms with the owner. Some five years later, after the stock market slumped in 1987, Earl was able to finally buy it for the same price that had been asked before. Later, Earl sold it to a buyer who sent the car to Gene Schmidt to be restored."

"The car was extremely solid, but, needed the usual drag car quarter replacement. For some strange reason, the paint supplier used the early '68 code of British Racing Green, and, the car was painted the wrong color. The car was completed, and, shipped to the owner in California, who enjoyed the car for a while, until he took it to a show, and, was informed by an "expert" that his car was "the wrong color". Well, the stuff hit the fan, and, eventually, he was refunded $6000. to get the car repainted correctly. Unfortunately, since the car looked great, even though it was incorrect, the owner never had it repainted."

"After two more short term owners, I was told about the car being available, but, it was slated to go to auction. I was able to buy it, and,had it home withing 48 hours of being told about it. The car has now been painted the correct Rallye Green, and, it is one of the strongest running cars I own."</font>

Mike Mahalo for bringing this 68 to SCR7. Being a person that is more of a 68 Camaro guy myself, I enjoyed seeing a car I had heard so much about finally in person. as for the color, Nice to see it back to what it should be but either one looked great on that car. Heres a little info you might like to print out about that subject as well.

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif This was one of my favorite "new cars" at SCR7...Until then I had never seen a rally green 68 Yenko Camaro, aside from some original photos I have that were taken in Canonsburg in 68. Did you happen to get a chance to see them? I was curious if it could possibly be the same car. If i get some time tonite i will try to post a couple here. Rally green is definitely a cool color...Does anyone know how many Yenkos were done in this color in 1968?

Very nice https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif Love the vintage pics. There may be a mark in the one photo in the middle of the tail panel of the tow car but if I am not mistaken it looks like a Firebird is the Camaro's tow vehicle. I guess that is the only way a Pontiac would get to be in front of that Camaro.

At least two of those photos were taken at Northstar Dragstrip sometime in the early '70's based on their surroundings. Can't be possitive about the other two and also appear to be Northstar. I am pretty sure they were NOT taken at Minnesota Dragways.

OK, here's the car i was referencing in my earlier post. These are Yenko promo/demo shots taken in 1968. Until I saw sixtiesmuscle's car at SCR7, I had never seen or heard of another rally green 68 sYc besides the one in these photos... could it be the same car? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif Sorry for the sub-par quality, I don't have a scanner and these are digital pics of original pics. Compare these with the current pics of the car...

Thanks to all for the generous comments, and, for any corrections on info I have received. The class winner stickers in the windows are still there, and, are from Minnesota Dragway. I really didn't know where the track pictures were taken, so, thanks Rick.

I've always been fond of the 68's. Although its often called a 'carry-over' from 1967, it has unique features only found in that year.

Thanks for sharing Mike https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: December '04 Feature Car

nice car and pictures
In Joe's original pictures it looks like the SS gas cap is painted over black to hide the SS?
then the front shot it has the SS emblem on grill?
This seems odd because other original pictures of 68s didn't have SS emblems.

camarojoe 12-02-2004 08:37 PM

Re: December '04 Feature Car

While most 68 Yenko cars had the grill SS emblems removed, and the gas cap SS blacked out, I don't think its that unusual for a few to have the SS's left in the grille as an oversight, much the way that several of the 69s didn't have the blue bowtie in the grill removed.

DarrenX33 12-02-2004 08:45 PM

Re: December '04 Feature Car

Well wait a minute. Doesn't it have SS on the sides as well? Were all SS identifiers intended to be removed on 68s?

Don picked some pretty neat colors for the '68s. This car in Rallye Green, the Teal Island Blue car that was at SCR1, owned by Kory Smith and restored by the SCW, https://www.yenko.net/reunion/yenkoks.jpg and Groto BLue, owned by Dave Christenholtz, a former feature car https://www.yenko.net/features/2001/July2001.htm

I just noticed the "nostrils" aren't opened up on the car in Joes pictures.

Re: December '04 Feature Car

Note that in the old drag photos the car does not have spoilers. Also, the car in the Yenko promotional photos doesn't have trim rings.

Re: December '04 Feature Car

Always interesting to look at vintage Yenko photos and compare the differences. For some reason, which I think is neat, even though all were built using the same blue print, each car seems to be just a little different then the next one, even the '69s and '70s, which for the most part were factory built and produced in volume. My guess is, Don was smart enough to know that every car enthusiast wanted to have his or her car relect their own personality. Mike's car is a good example of this, where two owners, even though brothers, had different ideas in how the car should look.

Joe,
The photo you have may very well be Mikes car. There were 5 RG 68 camaros in the first batch of twenty. Two went to Jay Kline in Minneapolis MN. A previous owner told me the photo with tow bar. Was taken going north on hwy 65 Central ave. On the way to Minnesota Dragways. I agree with Rick. The timing tower in the other photo looks like Twin Cities dragways. Earl

These vintage pics that Rob posted are of a Corvette Bronze "demo" in Florida. The grill emblem is absent, the gas cap is blacked out, it has trim rings, but, it's hard to tell if the hood is opened up.

JoeC 12-03-2004 02:06 AM

Re: December '04 Feature Car

The car in the B&amp;W photos looks like it has no front spoiler and the back spoiler looks like it is a aftermaket unit. It looks like the same type of spoiler that is on one of the restored red 68 Yenko Camaros.
There was at least one 68 ralley green COPO Camaro sold as 396 non converted car.

Mike, I have a set of promo photos of this bronze car as well. How do you know the pics were taken in Florida? I always figured they weren't taken in Canonsburg due to the palm trees seen in the background, but was no certain where the location actually was.
