Zedder's Red '67 L78

Here is a little info on the new '67 L78 that I just purchased. The car was advertised on ebay in 2006 and was a no sale. The owner and I kept in touch over the years and 2 hours before Tony was to inspect the Black L78 in Detroit, I get an email saying that he is finally ready to let the car go and accept my latest offer! Coincidence??? So, I call him as soon as I get home and we finalize the deal. Here is what I know so far about the car. The car was apparently sold new in New York and was raced by the first owner soon after he got it. It is a Bolero Red '67 SS396 L78 with M21 and 3.73 posi. All of the drivetrain is original. Black standard interior, am radio, power disc brakes, rally wheels, and a cowl plenum breather was added at some point.

Early in the car's life, he staggered the rear shocks like a '68 and added multi-leaf rear springs to help with wheel hop. Nothing else was cut-up or changed and the car retains all of it's original panels except the trunk lid (the SS hood comes with the car). There has been NO RUST in this car ever It has had one repaint in the wrong shade of red.

I'm not sure when the second owner bought it, but he sold it to the guy I bought it from in 1998 and it had 12,000 miles on it. It currently has 20,993 miles. As you can see it has a number of 70's mods like the wheels, cowl hood, air shocks, spoilers, electronic ignition, chrome alt bracket, flex fan etc. Also, the current owner put fresh rings and bearings and roller rockers on the car - original carb, intake, distributor (in a box), alternator.

Here are a few pics:

Re: Zedder's Red '67 L78

The main reason the car didn't sell on ebay was the due to the paint color being wrong and so the owner bartered with a friend to get it painted. It spent 2 years in paint jail just to come out fish-eyed. So, it is still de-chromed waiting for a proper paint job. I would really just like to set a budget of $20K to get the car repainted and all of the incorrect items straightened out, but I'm not sure if I should just wait and go all out with a full cosmetic resto of the sub and under-carriage etc. Decisions, decisions...

Freakin awesome.
I love it when the plan comes together.
I also like to see great cars like this end up in the RIGHT hands, and Mark, you are definitely the one Karma had in mind to be caretaker for this car. Just awesome.

Re: Zedder's Red '67 L78

Thanks guys...I really appreciate the kind words. The L78's didn't get SS horn buttons, but I have no idea why?

TAZ, thanks for the heads up...I saw that oil but didn't know where it was coming from. I know that I have a number of things to fix like that and the rubber fuel line!

Re: Zedder's Red '67 L78

Thanks Taz...if anyone else notices things like the leak Taz pointed out, feel free to mention it...you won't hurt my feelings . I've been away from Camaros for 10 years and I've forgotten a lot!

I'm currently leaning towards collecting parts and fixing all of the backyard mechanic work that was done in the past before doing anything with the paint. It's definitely getting some Cragar's so feel free to suggest wheel and tire options. Likely putting wheel opening and drip rail mouldings with pin stripes like we used to do on all our cars back in the 70's - sorry in advance to the purists

Good for you Mark!!! I think you made out better sticking to your guns and waiting for the right car to pop up. No rust is a big factor and completely matching to boot.

Re: Zedder's Red '67 L78

Grrrr. I hate pathological liars.

Reminds me of a guy I tried to deal with many years ago who allegedly had the original, damaged block for a car I was restoring. He went from, "it's in my garage," to "it's in my dad's garage" to "it's buried in the back yard of my dad's house" to "my dad found it in the garage just yesterday and threw it out with the garbage at the curb."

REALLY??? Your frikken 87-year-old father lifted a 200 lb engine block and carried it 100 feet to the curb??????

Sorry for your failed deal. You'll find something better.

Re: Zedder's Red '67 L78

Sorry to hear all that Mark, I've had the odd one like that too. But It makes us all appreciate dealing with real car guys, the guys that say yes to a price and stick to it. That don't shop your offer all over the place and sell it out from underneath you. Guys that never skirt around the " orig numbers matching" issues, the fake cowl tags, buildsheets, re-stamps, ..guys that tell you exactly the truth , which thankfully is the majority of guys I've been fortunate enough to deal with...
Good Luck Mark,...on to the next car....

Zedder 10-22-2017 03:15 PM

So this car might be available to me again and I could use some help in determining a budget for making it a nice cruise night car. It has 21,000 original miles on it. Here is the deal:

The car is sitting partially stripped right now as the owner was going to repaint it. There is NO RUST anywhere, but it needs stripped and repainted the correct shade of red. It needs a windshield, gas tank, fuel lines, tires and new Cragars, carb rebuilt, pinion seal, carpet and headliner and probably needs the brakes done. Also the correct harmonic balancer put on it. I’m sure there are other small things, but that is everything major.

So what is a realistic budget for this? Nice driver quality cruise night car...not a show piece. Ideally, i’d Like to get this work done in the US before shipping the car to Ontario as I don’t know anyone local that can do the work.

The car used to have a Stinger hood and cowl plenum breather on it when it was a weekend racer...I would do that again with wheel well and drip rail trim and white pin stripes...

Zedder 10-22-2017 06:44 PM

Let me put it another way...do you think I can get the work done for $30k? If so, any recommendations for a shop to do it? I’d love Brian at Super Car Workshop or Rick Nelson to do the car, but both are probably out of this price range. Thanks for any assistance offered!

Zedder 10-26-2017 02:11 AM

For those following along...a couple of members were kind enough to send me pm’s. Consensus is $15-$20k...or $30k for a top quality shop. Sure makes doing an L78 project difficult to justify.

Good to hear about your purchase Mark I know you’ve been looking for quite some time. I remember seeing this car in years past. Congrats and good luck. What’s the build date please?
Richard
