You are probably confused by all the talk about "reverse lock out" parts (bell crank, rods, etc.) when in fact most guys are referring to the factory reverse interlock system. It does not in any way "lock out" reverse. It is one of my pet peeves. That and referring to a VIN as a "VIN number". The factory never offered a "reverse lock out" system.

Some guys also refer to that system as the "backdrive". I have no idea if that is what GM called it. I have always referred to the reverse interlock system. With everything hooked up as it came from the factory, you cannot turn the key all the way to the off position without first putting the car in reverse. The linkage (hooked to the trans) would turn a collar on the steering column allowing the key to be moved to the off position.

What you have is a true "reverse lock out" that is designed so you don't accidently put it in reverse at the drag strip and accidently crash into the car behind you when you in fact meant to go forward.

You should probably post in the for sale section. I believe you are supposed to be a paid member to do so.

I'm wondering what it is that you have. I bought a Hurst Super Shifter Saturday with the separate reverse lever. I wonder if this is what you are talking about. Can you post a picture?

The factory "backdrive" system originated from the column shift cars. Moving the column shift from park to drive rotated the column outside shell which in turn moved a linkage connected to transmission. When the car had a floor shifter, they just reversed the concept so the floor shifter would rotate the column shell. This then required the trans to be in reverse (since there is no "Park" on a manual transmission) in order to remove the ignition key. Most of this linkage system bit the dust as soon as headers were installed, thus making it one of the more valuable parts for restorations.

This is the Hurst part he has. I agree that if he's only here to sell it, he should be a paid member and list it in the classifieds.

Thanks NorCam. I cruise this site quite a bit reading and gaining lots of knowledge. I appreciate you posting pics. I am here to learn and not take advantage of this great forum. -jw

Ok, never seen one of those before. How does it work?

"Ok, never seen one of those before. How does it work?"

The red knob sticks up next to a Competition Plus shifter, lift it up and the shifter won't move over into the reverse gate, push it down and it will let the shifter go in reverse ...

There are several part numbers for these, still trying to figure out the exact differences ...

Cool. I could have put one of those on the Super Shifter that I already had and wouldn't have had to buy another shifter. I only gave $190 for the complete shifter, so I guess I got a better deal anyway.

Not sure they will fit with consoles, or at least I was told they wouldn't???
