LM1 Camaro

What defines an LM1 Camaro? My friend has a 69 Camaro and we are trying to figure out if it is in fact a LM1 car. The car was ordered with a 350 4 barrel, M20 Muncie(has the 10.4" clutch), 12 bolt with 3.31 gears, multi-leaf springs(5) and manual drum brakes. It has the proportioning valve on the driver's side subframe. It is a late 68 Car and it has the walnut insert on the console plate that surrounds the shifter. Didn't GM do this for the early 69s? This was a fathom green RS car with back standard interior. He knows the original owner and he claims to have the protecto plate and original motor. What do we need to look for on the protecto plate and engine what will help designate this as an LM1 car? Will the protecto plate have 5LM1AA on it? The motor, if it is original, should have HQ stamped on the pad, right?

Re: LM1 Camaro

HQ for the Manual (3 or 4 speed) or HR for a auto PG and HS for a auto T350

Also, if it has the original air cleaner on it, it will be chrome like the SS models.

Original Motor and POP will tell for sure, but by what you mentioned (drum brakes) sounds like there is a good chance. Not many other early camaros non ss, non z, non pace that were ordered with 12 bolt ML, Muncie 4 speeds, etc.

Does it have a single or dual fuel lines?

Rich

If you get a chance, I would like to see a copy of the TTag, VIN and motor stamping if they are original.

Tks,

Rich

Here's a site I came across about a year ago that might shed some light for inquiring minds.

Interesting site not sure if it is finished yet or not.

Thanks to the CRG, most of the data came from them. I am just highlighting a unique car.

Makes you wonder, The 67-8 L30/M20, 69 LM1, 70-2 monte carlo 402, 70 Chevelle Heavy Chevy, why GM made these low key, no badging, hi po cars. They may not be supercars, but are certinly uniuqe, and cool, IMHO.

Re: LM1 Camaro

Minor clarification: The Chevelle "Heavy Chevy" was in 71-72--there was no '70 model. Also, most of the Heavy Chevy cars were all flash with no dash. Many had the 307 V8 and the car was designed to give the look of the SS models without the gas consumption or insurance cost of the real thing. Also, the car had lots of trim stripes and badging.

Re: LM1 Camaro

Sorry, and Thanks! I don't know anything about them, just saw a 402 model a while back. Guess it does not really fit into the point anyway as it was badged as a heavy chevy.

What other models had no/some badging and HiPo "stuff"?

Now, I have had a few of the 402 monte's before I got my 70 SS monte. They almost always have bucket seats (more so than the 454 SS models), always have the 12 bolt rear, and TH400, other than the muncie 4 speed cars. FWIW, no 454 SS Monte 4 speed has ever turned up!
