Saginaw smog pump rebuild

Anybody had a smog pump completely apart? I'm working with the drum inside & I was wondering if the end where the large bearing is, it looks like a spanner wrench would be used. Does that part actually unscrew? I wanted to clean it real good which would require removing the vains. Thank you, Joe

The fan is a press fit. If that is what you are talking about.

I have a Pair Devaning in progress.
The Large Torrington Bearing is mounted in an ENDPALTE that is then pressed into the open end of the rotor barrel. I used a three-jaw puller with the legs rotated and pressed against a solid piece of round stock placed inside the rotor cavity, to Pull the endplate with Bearing. Another option is to press the bearing down inside the rotor barrel and pull it out, but often the rotor blades and internal bearings are a source of interference. I ONLY work on De Vaneing them, Not interested in a working pump.

Llyods instructions over at Camaros.net were very very helpful

Yes, I'm trying to remove the end plate to get access to the rotors. I'm trying to make it a working unit. Sounds like the end plate is pressed in....Thank you, Joe

Removing Rotor Barrel Endplate

I used 2 leg puller with jaws reversed and pulled on the inner race, the bearing outer race fit held and the endplate pulled out from the barrel allowing access to the Vanes intact.

I have found OEM Vanes are Plastic and Rebuilt units have (GME) G9 Glass Melamine Epoxy Vanes. The Woven Glass vanes do not "Shatter" like the plastic one and are very difficult to remove necessitating endplate removal as if doing a usable rebuild. I think I used a smaller diameter support that would fit the Vanes intact for one pump and the other the plastic were destroyed.
