1970 Chevelle 12 Bolt Rearend CRV Code 3.31 Posi SS 454 Only LS5 LS6
 

This is an original 1970 Chevelle/El Camino 12 bolt positraction rear end specific to SS 454 models. The casting number on the housing is 3969278NF. The casting date is I 9 9 which decodes as September 9th, 1969. The stamping on the passenger side axle tube is CRV 1017B2 as shown. The CRV shows this rearend came from the factory with 3.31:1 gearing and a positraction differential specific to cars with the SS454 option. The 1017B2 shows this rearend was assembled on October 17th, 1969. This is a very early SS454 rearend that is correct for even the earliest of SS454 models.

This rearend is in good original condition as shown. It retains the original differential and gears. The pinion gear is stamped with the GM part number 3862693 and is dated 10 69 as shown. I don't see any stampings on the ring gear and I believe they were stamped on the inner flange of the gear in the 10/69 time frame. The posi looks to be casting number ED-30140PM1 and is stamped "E 11 J" as shown. The housing and cover are very nice and do not appear to have ever been refinished. There is scattered surface corrosion as shown. One shock mount had the bottom broken off at some point and the mounting hole was relocated upward as shown. The pinion flange is an original GM unit but does not appear to be original to this rearend. I have a nice original "9210" pinion flange that will be included with this rearend. The brakes are complete as shown. One drum is a replacement and the other appears original. The e brake cables appear original and look to be in good condition. The pinion spins smoothly with no excessive play or binding. This is simply a very nice original SS454 only 12 bolt posi rearend.
