1970 GTO Judge Rear Defog / Speaker Questions **70 GTO OWNERS**

Hoping some can help with a few questions. It appears in several Pontiac Parts Books that there may have been 2 different style Rear Defogger setups used in this model year.
It looks like there is the system that bolts to the rear seat divider with the plastic 90 deg duct and the long rectangular grill right behind the seat
OR
there may be the more common style style that mounts under the package tray with the rectangular grill mounted in center?? grill with NO cut of corner??
WHAT DO YOU HAVE OUT THERE and what is the build date of your car...
Was this a change from early to late?
To add to the questions, my car has an 8 track which automatically gave it the single rear speaker...If you had rear Defog with the package tray mount does this put the speaker off to the passenger side?
If the car had the Seat Divider mounted Motor does the speaker go back in the center?
I know this is a lengthy question but i know there are some knowledgable 70 people out there so i am hoping to get some good info.
My Car is a 10D built RAIV Judge...
Thanks in advance for any help...Posted this on the PY Forums as well but.....think I may get some better info here...

05/70 Judge - this car's PHS says it came with a rear stereo speaker and the electric rear window de-fog

So we know that 1969 Used the Seat Divider Mounted Motor with Duct and small rectangle Vent...
The 09/69 built example posted above used that style..
The 11D built example had switched over to the Package Tray Mount
The 05/70 car does not show the system but has the rectangle opening...I think that was there on all cars...Same Package Tray..
Would it just be an early / late transition?
And again if you had the single rear speaker it would go on the Passenger Side Regardless?
Hope we get a few more examples to Narrow this down...
Good Stuff...This is helping...I and the previous owner of my 10D built Judge felt it originally had the early 69 style...Though it was missing...

1969 Chevelles' followed this same scenario as well,as I've removed dozens of both designs,(Seat divider/Package tray),from 1969 assemblies back then.
I never bothered to look at each cars production date,or assembly plants,(shared with Chevelle),but now wish I had.

The original question is based on 1970 Models.
I was under the impression that all 69 Lemans GTO models had the Seat Divider Mounted Blower. Am i wrong here?
Are you saying that you have seen 69 Chevelle models come with both styles?
Still thinking that VERY EARLY 69 built 1970 Models received the Seat Divider Blower and at some point early on they switched to the package tray mount...
Still hoping for a couple more examples to make sure....

Yes.
Just thought it might help shed some light on your '70 Lemans inquiry.

Great Post and Pic Tracker1...Indicates that a 12c built 70 DOES have the package tray mounted motor...
MR70...I did not know Chevelles used BOTH in 1969..I would say it shouldbe relevant but would have to have confirmation that there is a 1969 Lemans GTO out there with the package tray mounted motor... I know 1968 used the PKG TRAY mounted motor so....what does that mean? I HAVE NO IDEA....Still confused but am leaning towards using a Seat Back Motor and Single Speaker on Pass Side...Also helps that I have a perfect unrestored system that came out of a 69....
ON A SIDE NOTE. I posted this exact same question at same time on PY Forums (you know, the Pontiac Only site) and have not had even a single response...
LOVE SCR Registry...So much REAL knowledge...So appreciated....

The OO Judge above was equipped with de-fog and rear speaker and the speaker opening is obviously on the pass. side. So I think you'd be correct in making your car the same. It is a rare option combination, so finding one that shows whether it's the slimmer elongated vent or the usual vented rectangular one when combined w/the speaker is the key, yeah.

Tracker1.....I just saw that you said the OO Judge ha "Electric Window Defog" on the PHS....To add a little more to this subject, 1970 was the first year that the ELECTRIC window defog was available....This was the Electric Grid in the Rear Glass System...That was Rare in 1970 as it only started becoming common in the early 70's...
If this s what he PHS says than that is the style they are referring to...
Also...The SLIM grill IS an indicator of the Seat Back Mounted Motor...The was tucked back close to the seat and the plastic duct routed the Air to the grill mounted JUST BEHIND the seat..as shown in one of the first pics above...The more common rectangle grill is an indicator of the Package Tray Motor..
I will post pics of the Seat Divider system shortly....No Seat Back divider used I presume???As answers come, questions develop....Thanks...

My '70 Judge Ram Air IV has the electric grid rear defroster. '70 was the first year that it was available in A Body Pontiacs.

Mr70 01-22-2022 07:50 PM

There's a 1970 GM Factory TSB somewhere telling the dealers that their rear "defogger" blower was just that, and not intended to de-ice.
Their rear warming electric grid came out soon after and was now touted as a "defroster".
