325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
I donīt know why this was published in the Swedish magazine Start & Strip in 1968. There must have been more dragstrips. Where these NHRA sanctioned ? http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...ripsin1968.jpg http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...sin1968001.jpg http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...n1968003-1.jpg |

For example, the list is missing "Lapeer International Dragway", in Lapeer Michigan, which was in business in 1968 and is still in operation. K |

As for the Indiana listings, Avilla was IHRA, US 30 was UDRA I believe, Osceola was independent/outlaw or NADS and Terre Haute, which was NHRA is completely missing. I also know there was a George Ray type drag strip in Van Wert Ohio that isn't listed. Had to be a lot more than 325 no doubt.

Happy to report 3 of the 4 are still open in Kentucky. And 2 more newer ones that I know of. They are London, Ky and Jamestown, Ky

I found another remark made in 1970 that NHRA had 160+ dragstrips and AHRA had 90+ (canīt remember the exact numbers). So those 325 canīt be NHRA only.

I also noticed that Van Wert was missing and they are also missing Kettlersville, OH.

That can't be accurate. Midwest Raceway in Manhattan, KS. isn't listed. It was an AHRA track at one time, I believe.

Also Nashville IL.,in southern, IL., had a great dragstrip w/ huge crowds on Sunday's, they were know for having big name match races nearly every week between Chevy, Dodge, and Ford , I watched Dick Harrell race here several times ,he usually won.

Neat listing - Thanks. Elk Creek and Waynesboro were left off of the Virginia list. Smaller strips to be sure.

Re: 325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
Here is another list of sanctioned drag strips from 1969 that I found in a "National Dragster" that Sammy sent me earlier this year. Sanctioned by whom ? I understand there are/were a few different organisations like NHRA, AHRA, IHRA. Was National Dragster a magazine just for one of these organisations ? http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...strips1969.jpg http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...ips1969001.jpg |
Re: 325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
National Dragster was/is the voice of the NHRA.
No tracks listed in MO (MoKan, KCIR, MAR). Only 1 track listed for Kansas (Great Bend, converted air strip, site of the first US nationals, still in existence). |
Re: 325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
Found this in a Start & Strip from 1969. They were selling these almanacs which contain a "complete dragstrip listing". Since I donīt have one of these almanacs, I donīt know what made a track get on the list or not. http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/q...ingAlmanac.jpg |
Re: 325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
Just noticed they included W. Germany above in the "Sanctioned Drag Strips" that Ramstein AB (USAF) was included. Never knew they had a drag strip there. Very Cool!

Some pics from Ramstein in this blog. Itīs in Swedish so it wonīt be easy to read, but there are some musclecars in there. I bet dragracinghistory.de would show some nice pics but the website is not up for the moment. http://k-retro.blogspot.com/2011/03/...vaterland.html Just scroll down ! |

Re: 325 Dragstrips in the US in 1968 ?
Bump. Curious if anyone has anymore old papers on NHRA sanctioned strips in the 60's - 70's. I just picked up a NHRA decal for New Hope Drag Strip in New Hope, ALA. From what I understand it was NHRA sanctioned for 3 years. That's probably why it is listed in the paper Anders posted. The New Hope track closed many years ago but being a local area track it was cool to find a decal.

It was an old portion of autobahn A-6, that used to run through the Base. That piece of A-6 is still there and leads out to the 435 CTS site leaving the West Gate. When I was stationed at Zweibrucken AB back in 80-82 we would do rapid runway repair on that portion of the old A-6, EOD would blow a hole/crater and we would go out and practice patching a simulated piece of the runway. Fun stuff (NOT). Sembach AB runway was also used for weekend races, they had road races on it and thru the taxiways and had a drag strip layed out, the runway was inactive for quite a while then got repaired and opened back up. Bitburg AB runs drags on the summer weekends now. http://www.1on1-motorsports.de/mambo45/ |

Great history John. Can't keep those American airmen from doing what they love!
