LS6 Carb and manifolds

I recently bought a Ls6 m22 car it doesn't have the correct holley carb or exahaust manifolds. ive found a few carbs and before I drop more than I think its worth really on a used in need of rebuild carb I want to make sure I get the right one. the engine is dated march 23 1970. my understanding is 4557 GG carb is what I need I've found several. The closest to march I've found is a 012 dated which would be January second week of in 70 right? I found one from 427king dated 9A3 would that be third week November 69? thanks for any and all help i'm very green to this stuff. 427king also has a set of manifolds dated second week of febuary 1970 I just would like to make sure before I pay a lot of money for any of this stuff i'm putting the correct dates on the car thank you

The 4557 3967477GG carb is correct for a 49 state car as the California delivered cars take the 4556 3969894GP to be used with the charcoal canister.

As for the dates, the 012 carb is going to be about it as I believe the next available carb was manufactured on 035 which would be later than your engine.

In addition to making sure you have the correct date, also look to make sure that you have an assembly line carb with correct pieces and not one pieced together with the later counter parts or a restamp. Should also have the 4519 rear metering block and 6328 front metering block. Check over the base plate to make sure it is an assembly line piece and not a later counter piece. Also look at the airhorn area. There are many areas to look at for the base. Restamped carbs are all over the place so just because it has the correct stampings on it does not make it an original assembly line carb. Over the counter carbs have incorrect choke pulloffs, base plates, vent actuator arm, accelerator pump housings, throttle levers, etc, etc, etc so do your homework if you want an assembly line piece.

Welcome RichLS5
Make sure you ask any seller with exhaust manifolds for your solid lifter LS-6 Chevelle,(with the correct threaded 8 A.I.R. ports),if they are old originals that originally came that way from the factory,or are they the lesser horsepower hydraulic lifter design manifolds that were recently tapped for the higher horsepower w/A.I.R.

Yes, agree. Nothing worse than buying a set of threaded plug manifolds that have been abused/rusted and have had wrong threaded plugs jammed into the holes only to find out later the threads are no good and there is no way to install your tubes. Make sure the seller guarantees you can install the tubes properly, otherwise youll be stuck with plugs for good. Great point

awesome thank you rick! Dave had given me the inspection report from you I want to slowly chip away at the parts on the car I plan on hanging onto it for quite some time!

The carb was not installed on the engine until it was pulled for installation in a vehicle.
(the engines were fired at Tonawanda using a plenum with natural gas - you couldn't have latent fuel inside the fuel tracts engines packed into rail cars.)
Meaning Carb dates can be later than engine assembly dates, just not later than CAR BUILD DATES.

There are numerous January of 70 dates that were produced by GM including 012 , 013 and 014 . Not much as Rick stated after that besides the 035 on 4557's.
The bulk of 4557 production appears to have been prior to Jan of 70 Just like the distributors. A bunch were produced for production early on so it's not uncommon to see an LS6 with a fairly early dated carb or distributor.
