Hard to believe Popular Science could have been this irresponsiblel, even in 1963.

LOL... Oil bio degradation as it was called - took many forms where early mineral oils were disposed of to degrade naturally. When I was a kid in the 1960's we lived on a dirt road and when the road got dusty my Dad would call the TWP and shortly thereafter the oil truck came and sprayed the road down with recovered oil.

Typically kept the dust in check for an entire month!

Government (DOE) was still using oil bio degradation plots as late as the 1980's. Efficiency was calculated at 55-82% after 1 year.

The old guy I rent space from had a big construction business from the 40’s into the 70’s. He had 100’s of machines and trucks. He said he’d take all the oil change oil and use a big spray machine and spray all his yard and roads with the oil to keep all the dust down. He’s real cheap. He also had a paving business and didn’t pave his yard for 35 years cause he was so cheap. He’s worth about 50 million.

They used to oil the dirt roads when I was a kid.
My neighbor would pour his old oil in the sewer. I used to see him do it all the time. Lol

I can just imagine Greta Thunbergs head exploding if she were to see that.

We have come along way...

I think I’m going to do it.

Well into the 1980's I used to pour my drain oil along the fence line of my property to keep the weeds down.

Oops!

It came from the ground in the first place, right?

They used to use Agent Orange to defoliate the cotton plants so the bolls could be picked by machine, too.
