Firewall pad installation???

When installing the firewall pad, did the factory have a punched out piece of the pad around the steering column firewall seal or was the steering column seal bolted to the firewall behind the pad. I see some of the reproduction firewall pads have a perforated triangle around the steering shaft hole and I see some without it. I have not found a unmolsted car to verify this on. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I just pulled the column from my car & the column was bolted to the firewall & the pad was next.....Joe

Firewall pad question

Didn't find my answer in a search so grabbed this old thread to add onto it. The AIM doesn't mention the firewall pad so my question is related to how the steering column clamp plates interface with the pad. I bought a molded pad from HBC and it has a hole cut out for the column but it also had a much larger perforated section around that hole. I know the 2 pc. clamp plate with foam seal goes against the inside of the metal firewall but how do you get it behind there? Do you remove the larger perforated opening? Guess I'm wondering what it looks like after it's assembled.

I've done a couple of these HBC pads. The most recent one was really good quality and fit really well. I remove the perforated area to provide access for the column to go through the firewall and for the seal & shroud to secure in this area.

Did the factory have this large of an opening, or just the smaller hole?

I took a look at my reference pics, it sure looks like the pad goes underneath the columns rubber boot, so I would say the hole is small, same diameter as column. My .02 :)

When doing my resto, I only cut a small round hole for column to go through the pad, I did not remove that large section, no pics of that of course :(

Thanks for the pic. It almost looks like the large cutout was separated from the rest of the pad and then re-installed? I'm looking at the area just to the right of the brake bracket mount....the flap for that section is folded down exposing the jute backing.

What paint or sealer did you put on your floors, that's the color I'm looking for on my floors and inner structure?
