Survivor Duster

I definitely wasn't looking for a Duster but here it is. '72 340 with 4 speed and buckets. 18,350 miles with original Basin Street Blue paint. Window sticker, broadcast sheet, sales invoice and more. One owner until I bought it in January. Original tires included which were removed at 2000 miles.

WOW! Love a 340, 4 Speed Duster. Congrats!

These are great cars....and very quick!

Outstanding find! They are still out there.

I'd like to say in all honestly, I'm jealous. No doubt everyone over on MOPARTS would be too. :headbang:

PhilS 02-10-2019 03:18 PM

Thanks Dan,
235 hp doesn't sound like much but it moves 3100 lbs pretty well.

GrumpyJeff 02-10-2019 05:12 PM

ScottG 02-10-2019 05:22 PM

SS427 02-10-2019 08:48 PM

Wow. That thing is sweet. Love those cars. Enjoy it!

Bill Pritchard 02-10-2019 09:12 PM

Very nice, congrats. As the former owner of a 340/4 speed Dart Swinger, I can attest to just how quick they are.

RALLY 02-10-2019 09:36 PM

Nice Duster. Agree the 68-69 340 4 speed Dart Swingers were quick. Chevy guy here, but next in line would be the 340 Dart.

mockingbird812 02-10-2019 10:18 PM

Love it Phil!

That car has the wow factor in many ways. Love to see that car at MCACN. :Can-I-Have-It:
Congratulations!!!

Thank you guys. Quite a story on this one. A fanatical owner who planned to keep it forever. His wife says she was never allowed to sit in it. It was featured in Mopar Muscle and Muscle Car Review in the late 80s. 250 miles put on in the last 30 years. I'm not sure about hood scoops in '72 but it was on an order sheet and scratched out. I believe the color is the same as Petty Blue.

cudino 02-11-2019 05:21 AM

That thing’s awesome! Very cool Phil.

Beautiful car, and I love that these survivors are still out there for us to hunt, inspect, and use as historical material, but it makes me sad to hear statements like "his wife wasn't allowed to sit in it".

I'm not knocking anyone's personal decisions, how they spend their time or money, but I suspect they would have made some great memories driving the car. I say this from the point of view of someone who still owns their first car; one that my wife and I dated in and she's far more sentimental about it than I am. We could have made a lot MORE memories if I wasn't fanatical about the car in my late teens and early twenties.

PhilS, congrats on the purchase! I hope you enjoy it in anyway you prefer! I'd love to own something like that.

Jonesy 02-11-2019 10:24 PM

Wow, that car is pristine. The previous owner obviously was a fanatic about his car.
To keep it all these years and protect it is amazing to me. I see there is a scratch in the drivers rear quarter. That guy must have been freaking out when that happened!!

You have a nice car there!!

Engine compartment was fluffed after Ziebart was removed. Sorry for the repeats. Doing this on my phone and obviously not very well.

mockingbird812 02-14-2019 01:28 AM

I forgive the transgression (fluffing). Car and color is just too cool!!

Yeah, that would go over well at my house  A few years back I was ready to pass my Chevelle ragtop on to a new owner and my wife said "you are NOT selling that car!" So needless to say, it's still in the family

mockingbird812 02-14-2019 02:21 AM

Ha Bill! I get where she is coming from. Such a cool ride with a great story! Say hey to Marilee for me!

Postsedan 02-14-2019 09:19 AM

You need to bring your Duster to the Mopar Nationals at Carlisle. Your car deserves to be there.

https://www.carlisleevents.com/event...sler+nationals

They have a Mopar Survivor Display....it's very impressive. Your Duster will fit right in :)

Dan

PhilS 02-14-2019 01:58 PM

Thanks Dan,
I may try it if I can make the time. I've never been.

Postsedan 02-14-2019 02:29 PM

Phil,

The Mopar Nationals at Carlisle is a Bucket List, especially now that you own this Special Duster....you can be crusing the fair grounds and playing Kansas - “Dust In The Wind” :)

My first Brand new Car was a 73 Duster 340. Having just returned from a job posting in Halifax I decided to sell my well worn 68 Camaro (50,000 miles in 18 months). I wanted a New Camaro but the Chev dealer couldn't get what I wanted.
The Chrysler Plymouth Dealer across the street had 3 340's in stock all automatics but only one had Sure Grip. Thats the one I chose and was out the door with in in three days.
Circuit raced it, drag raced it and put 50,000 miles on it in 18 months. It was a good car.

Cooll story Paul. Is that Plymouth's "Landau" vinyl roof?

I think it was just called a Half vinyl top.

This car was featured in Car Review magazine in the 1980s. I believe it was from around Johnstown, PA.

As a point of interest the 73 Camaro Z/28 with it's L-82 based 350 making 245 HP was tested by a magazine (I think back in the day) and compared to a 70 Z and the quarter mile times were almost identical . They attributed a lot of it to the better radial tires on the 73 but to think that 245 HP could even run in the same zip code as 360 HP is impressive, net vs gross power or not !

442w30 03-04-2019 05:35 PM

And what were the times that were nearly identical?

The 360 is a Gross HP number. In 1972 they advertised Net HP, which is what the 245 number is.
