1969 Camaro with replacement VIN

Has anyone ever came across a Camaro or any other car with a reissued VIN?

I’ve been looking at 1969 Camaro. It’s a decent car but the VIN has been changed at some point. The VIN in the top has dash has been changed. Everything matches on the title. Would this been done years back if the car was stolen at some point?

Thanks,
Ray

Probably a state issued vin. I have seen several, and even applied for one for a client.

Happens when the car is stolen, then recovered and the vin plate (or sometimes other parts, like the trim tag, even) have been tampered with or destroyed.

There was a process that existed at least as late as 1968, where a stolen car could indeed receive a re issued VIN with the same number from the original manufacturer. I owned for years a 1965 Fuel injected convertible stolen in 1968, with tons of paperwork and a re issued GM VIN plate with the same original VIN. Are you saying your car has the original VIN with a re issued plate or the same VIN with a preproduction plate or a different VIN with a preproduction plate?

If it is the BAT example shown above, that one really scares me. That appears to me to be nothing more than a homemade plate made to replace a missing (or intentionally removed for reasons of deceit) factory plate. That does not look anything like a state or province issued replacement vin identification sticker/plate/whatever (that I am aware of).

There is no way to know if the number they used (and the paperwork it comes with) was originally issued to that vehicle unless the "hidden" stampings are located and verified.

I was actually shocked when I spied that on BAT.

Well I have a hard enough time with bonded tilted cars on the original numbers. No way would I touch that car with a 20' pole.

I cant think that would pass an out of state inspection in ohio. They dont look real close when I had it done but thats obvious

A couple years back I bought a '67 Firebird convertible. Car had a California state issued vin tag riveted to the drivers door jamb. After purchasing the car... I ran PHS and it matched the car... colors... options.. etc... The car had a 400 hood with Chevy straight 6 under the hood with a 3spd manual on the floor. PHS came back as a 326 with a floor mounted 3 speed manual.

Years back a buddy traded a blown up Chevy Tahoe for a very rough 66 Chevelle post car. Car had been hit very hard on drivers front.. but came with a bunch of parts including an extra frame(with a 138 vin). IIRC.. the body did not have a vin tag. My buddy put the car together using the extra frame. He then took it to CHP to be inspected and verified. CHP issued a new vin tag using the frame number.. Needless to say... he had the only 2 door post '66 Chevelle with a 138 SS396 vin.

I am amazed that BaT allows cars with homemade vin tags on their platform. That Camaro is not the first....... I would not touch that car with a ten foot pole.

It’s not the car posted above here. Here is a picture.

The Vin is 12437JC105138.

The car isn’t mine, it’s at a dealer. The VIN is also the title as well.
