Need advice on lack of title

I know it has been discussed before but I could not find it. Have any of you found a "car in a barn" so to speak that was almost 70 years old, very restorable but no title? If so, how can one obtain the abandoned vehicle and title it? Asking for a friend. ;)

It varies state to state and with the state you live in ... well it probably has more challenges than mine.

I have done a few titles like this. Pre Covid it was very easy, I applied, had it inspected by the state representative, he then approved paperwork to move forward, at that time they would let me know how big of a bond to purchase and after that was done/proved i received a bonded title. Which i would like to add is 100% transferable and after a certain time limit (3years) it is over and you have a regular title again

Easiest way. Have a buddy with a towing business and have it towed to his lot. Attempt to find the last, legal owner and have your buddy send them a bill for towing and storage. After the required wait time, he can apply a mechanics lien and get a title.

It doesn't work that way in Illinois. I owned a towing business for 30 years and we towed for both the Illinois State Police and the Elk Grove Village Police. I would average over 150 vehicles a year that I had to process paperwork to get titles so we could dispose of, or sell parts off of them.

When applying for a Mechanics Lien, the paperwork started with a signed invoice for the "Services Rendered" (repair invoice or authorization to tow the vehicle in question) When applying for a title through Illinois, the paperwork started with a Certificate of purchase, then a Salvage Certificate, then an inspection by the Secretary of State Police, resulting in a Rebuilt Title (Branded for the life of the vehicle). When going the rebuilt Title route, the Police tow report was used as authorization to tow the vehicle. That's my story for what it is worth.
