Baldwin Corvette Canada

Seems like this is the place on this site where the Canadians hang out, anyone know the Corvette on the cover of this magazine? I believe it may have been in the Toronto area?

Give us more info. WHY do you think it was in the Toronto area? Do you have any pics of the car in Toronto?

Luvchevs 01-05-2022 02:40 AM

Keep in mind this was 45 years ago but I recall reading the article and thinking this car was close to me as I grew up in Etobicoke. The unusual headlights are what I really remember.

2'nd pic a '69? Motion Coupe inside Lance Hill's Racing Engines Toronto shop back in the day.
Not sure what year Lance's pic is from but this or other Motion 'Vettes he had around could be what you're remembering?
Otherwise, Bob MacDonald Chevy Halifax was Motion connected also wasn't there a Motion 'Vette somewhere out Kingston way?:hmmm:

Pete,

Thanks for your reply.
I distinctly remember those very unusual headlights on the car on the front cover.
I will have to see if the article is posted on the internet anywhere however it is probably like looking for a needle in a haystack!

Owner Mike Tschilas of Toronto, anyone know the guy?
I can see this car hanging out at the Harvey's at Jane and 401 back in the day?

Well, I asked you a few posts back to give us more info. You didn't have any I guess.

Lance will probably back this up. The Orange Vette used to be parked on Jane St on the west side south of what is now Black creek Dr. In a gas station (Gulf), so that was 2 minutes from Harveys....

If the Hugger Orange Vette was a conv it was a 67 435 originally black and delivered to Belmont (then possible dealer trade to Golden Mile). I understand it was on a used car lot near Jane and 401 a while after a short, rough early life

Luvchevs 01-06-2022 01:44 PM

LT1vette sorry I am not trying to be elusive.
This car has been in my mind since I read about it in 1975 in the magazine. I've been passionate about Corvettes since I was a young boy when a neighbor bought one new in 1975.
My Dad would let me buy car magazines when we went to the convenience store together.
Baldwin Motion cars got a lot of hype in the magazines back then. When I read about this car and it was in TORONTO not far from where I lived I always hoped to one day see it in person but that has yet to happen.
It would have been a very expensive car back in the day and I wonder what ever happen to it?
I know there are some serious muscle car enthusiasts from Toronto on this site so I was curious if anyone knew the car and had any stories about it.

Midyr the car I am asking about is the 1971 Motion Corvette Orange convertible on the cover of the Chevy Action magazine in above post.

I was also told it was modified with fender flares and other tack ons and so quite possibly could be mistaken for a Baldwin Motion. I only knew of one real B-M Vette and that is the one pictured above and another pic here. Lance also had a chocolat brown one with "ZL1" on the hood that he drove for about a week when a Montreal customer left it with him for work and that has been widely assumed since to be a B-M. but it was a clone.

Oh, and further, I spoke at length with Ronnie Locke, long time high perf salesman at Bob McDonald Chev in Halifax and they never got a B-M Vette. They did however get a BB Camaro from Nickey that Ronnie raced.

Midyr thanks for your reply. Bassed on the article in the magazine it appears there was another Motion modified Vette in the Toronto area in the 70’s.
What do you know about the one in the pic you posted? Looks like a sweet ride! What colour ws it? Do you know if it still exists?

It was brand new in these pics. A customer bought it off of the floor at Baldwin after calling me and I advised him not to. Had it trailered from Long Island to my shop and we immediately took the motor out. Have pics of the motor somewhere. Pearl yellow. Over-the-counter L88 w/Turbo 400 & Hone overdrive. Was told yrs ago it is owned somewhere in the US

I saw that car on the Motion showroom floor as an 8 year old. My parents visited the shop to inquire about ordering a Phase III Camaro but, I was struck by the stunning Phase III GT Corvette. It was sitting next to a candy apple red VW Beetle that was all souped up.
In another section of their showroom were some VW based dune buggies.

I always wondered what happened to that Corvette.

Wow cool story!
Couple questions.
Why did you advise him NOT to buy it?
Why did you immediately pull the motor?
Are you still in the Toronto area?

Dave Rifkin, thanks for your response.
So cool you saw that car when new!
It amazes me the stories that come from the people on this site!
What did your parents end up buying, a station wagon with imitation wood paneling on the side?

We might have visited there before they bought the left over grabber blue 1969 Shelby GT500. They only kept that car for something like 6-8 months. They complained that it rode too rough. The wound up trading it in on a 1970 Oldsmobile Delta 88 convertible. I was heart broken when we pulled away in that stupid convertible and watched the Shelby disappear from view.

Classy answer, I respect that. What a story, it truly is amazing the knowledge and history amongst us.

No, that was a brand new 396-325 4-spd RS that McDonald loaned to Gil to race. Bob also loaned Gil a brand new blk/red 67 Corvette 435 and one night at the Irving station they swapped the motors. The 435 motor eventually found its way back to the Corvette many years after. Crazy times.

Reading this thread reinforces the view about the incredible knowledge base of muscle car history the members of this site have in their memory banks. It continues to amaze me.

Think it was just meant as a joke. Ronnie Locke was anything but grumpy, a very popular and highly respected gentleman

McDonald's got the Hugger Orange 635421 Camaro only, according to GM Canada, However, the Burgundy 635088 Camaro, documented by GM Canada as "General Motors of Canada - Zone Product Stock, Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada", may have been ordered by McDonald for delivery directly to the Moncton Zone Office...right across the road from Gil Tremblay's Irvine station, for Gil's use
