Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
Several different vintage drag photo discussions have been started recently with some great photos posted. Thus, I want to see some vintage photos of the haulers or tow rigs that pulled these cars to the track. If another discussion has already been started on this topic in the past, please paste a link or pull the photos into this one. Here are two photos that have already been posted to get things started.

Love those old haulers ..
Thanks for starting this thread |
Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
You have the Mongoose, here is the Snake. Not a vintage picture (2 years ago), I talked to Don Prudomme and he told me he found his old tow rig in a yard and restored it. This is his original tow rig and original race car. How far the sport has come:

Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
all the high dollar Chrysler teams with the enclosed rigs and the poor Chevy guys with the open rigs. HMMMMM funny how the guy with the little white vega and the "old style" red open rig carrier had all those big boys numbers!

Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
I went through 2 ramp trucks during my racing years, a 1963 Ford single cab dually with a steel bed of unknown origin (very similiar to one pictured here), and a 1976 Chevy crew-cab dually with a Hodges bed. The popular box trailer was just coming to be the norm, but I always had a company demo and no truck as a tow vehicle so the ramp trucks really made sense for me. I wish I had the second one back as it was real nice and would come in handy today.

I can't compete with some of those rigs (...edit: ANY of those rigs - lol), but here's how we started out:

Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
I still have the old tow bar, so I added a hitch to the Grand Prix so that I could do this (pics taken May, 2010):

Here is the hauler we built for our 81 Pro Stock Camaro from an old tractor we found in a junk yard. We build the box out of aluminum tubing and covered it in prepainted aluminum sheets.

Along the lines of less flashy, lower budget, but effective....

Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
The Brooklyn Heavy car hauler in the very first post(top pic)is now owned by Dan Palchanes. He brought I to my friend's shop a few years back and Heavy came down and took pictures with it and signed off on it. It would be great if my recent efforts to authenticate and buy Heavy's Harrell built 70 Camaro ever pay off.

The car hauler in the second pic is the one owned by Dan Palchanes. It has a lot of differences from the one in the first pic. I am not saying it is or isn't the same or one of Heavy's haulers. I'm just pointing out that the two haulers have differences. Dan's hualer restored would be awesome. The photo doesn't show it well, but it has a ribbon paint scheme on the bed sides. Much like the Motion Ribbon Camaro. It is very cool. Thanks, Marty |

Re: Vintage Drag Car Haulers or Tow Rigs.
I wasn't sure about that. I remember that the one Dan has still has some of the lettering from Heavy on I,so I didn't think it was the second one. I wasn't sure since I do remember that Dan's truck seemed like a regular 1 ton,and the truck in the first pic is longer and has a heavier chassis then Dan's. Either way,it is a cool hauler. I myself would be torn on just how much to restore it.
