Hurst Shifters

Is there a site or posted information on how to identify original GM hurst shifters. I opened a crate today with quite a load in it that we put away 25 years ago. I want to make sure I identify them correctly. Many have 3138 on the side and yes some are 69 camaro but there is quite an arrangement of different handle styles etc looks like some maybe GTO, 442 and even a hurst olds. This is not over the counter stuff for the most part and pretty confusing right now. I think this one is 69 camaro

Thanks for the help

No, that is not a 69 Camaro shifter. Could be a 70+ one though.

Sounds like you needs Pete Serio's Hurst shifter book:

Hi Kurt:
Yes Sir I heard about the book today in fact. I'm learning the hard way however. You are right it is not 69 camaro.See when I first posted I seen the 3138 so assumed camaro.Seems 3138 just means factory Gm installed??Camaro is offset to the side I know now. There is at least one of those in the box also however.A new guess on this one is early 65 -66 GTO it also has 04206115M on it the other I looked at last night was a 6356 which I think is dodge.I'm not too bad on the factory GM old style and 68-72 muncie ones but these hurst are a new game to me. It is the pile of rods that are real confusing.Especially knowing someone probally could use them .So far I helped out one guy with a old nova shifer he has been looking for. Some have been sending me pictures of what they need and that helps a lot.One by one we will get through them since I have no requiremenmt for them in any of our cars .There is probally 15 or 16 there some with handles some without. All way older than 25 years.
Hard to believe there is nothing documented other than the book you mention on the old hurst shifters.

That looks like the unit and handle in our '72 Lemans Sport. Some GTOs came with a the Tee handle like that one.

You can use a regular Hurst catalog and ID a lot of the shifters by the features shown in the catalog. Takes some time, but it works.

Re: Hurst Shifters

3macs 3138 does designate a factory GM, Ford or even AMC shifter housings. Can you tell me the number that is at the base of the shifter handle itself? You may have to remove it from the shifter to see it all. If you can get that number you will be able to tell what car that shifter came from.

The longer number is a warranty registration or shifter serial number.

The four digit code at the base or on the flat blade that is inserted into the shifter housing for a GTO should be 4177 67-72 Tempest Lemans GTO with bench seat. 3 or 4 speed
4178 67 LeMans or GTO 3 or 4 speed with or w/o console
5268 67 Lemans or GTO 3 or 4 speed second design
5324 68-69 Gto or Lemans 3 or 4 speed with or w/o console
5325 68-69 Firebired 69 Camaro 3 or 4 speed with or w/o console
4555 70-72 GTO or Lemans buckets with or w/o console
7244 70-78 Firebird 4 speed
7433 70-71 Camaro 4 speed with or w/o console

Re: Hurst Shifters

Hi Mike:
I will try to get it out, seems the feelers on either side will not release it like normal and two hacksaw blades are too thick. There are some with handles some without and some I think have the wrong handle stuck in them.
This shifter body also has comp plus and 04206115M on the side if that means anything.
I just sold one with the 4177 handle to the nova guy who wanted it for a bench seat big block. He was using the handle in a camaro shifter. I am looking for a second for a site member.
Thanks for the feedback
