35 years after he purchased special-edition Chevy Nova, it’s still owner's pride and joy

SMITHFIELD — In December 1970, Alan Ives had just gotten a job.

Pumped up with his newfound success and swaggering - just a little- Ives tooled over to Colonial Chevrolet in Norfolk, got out of his clunker and strode across the car lot.

"I want a Corvette," he said.

He remembers the car salesman patting him on the shoulder, handing him keys to the blue, low-slung beauty and telling him to take it home for the night. Later, Ives called his insurance agent, who happened to be his father's best friend.

"He wouldn't stop laughing," Ives recalled. "He told me, at my age, I'd never be able to pay the insurance."

He took the Vette back the next day. The salesman had something else for him to look at. Sitting across the lot with a handful of similar sedans was a dark blue Chevy Nova with white stripes. Black leather upholstery. Push button AM radio. Hidden under the hood, though, was a beast that few Novas ever knew: a 350-cubic-inch, solid lifter, Corvette LT-1 engine with a Muncie M-21 four- speed transmission. It was a Yenko Nova, the product of a Pennsylvania race car driver who pulled stock Chevrolets from the assembly line, pumped them with power and released them in very limited numbers.

"Guys like me, just driving the streets, could have a performance car," Ives said. "And I could afford the insurance."

He walked away from the car lot grinning. After 35 years, he's still grinning. The car has recently undergone a four-year restoration. It's as bright and shiny as new. And it will be featured with about 200 other vintage Chevrolets on Saturday at the Spring Dustoff car show in Smithfield. In case of rain, you can peek inside the trailer that transports "Blue Thunder." Ives doesn't take the car out in the rain. And it's not for sale.

"It's a trailer queen," said his wife, Margie. "It used to carry us. Now, we carry it."

There were only 175 of the Nova Deuce LT-l's made. Colonial Chevrolet had 12, and that was only because Josh Darden, who owned the dealership at the time, was friends with Don Yenko, whose father owned Yenko Chevrolet in Canonsburg, Pa. Was it fast?

"What do you think?" Ives said, grinning as he recalled Saturday nights on lonely back roads. "In the quarter mile, there was nothing else out there that could catch it."

The "mini muscle car" got about 10 miles to the gallon, but so what? Back then, gasoline was about 35 cents a gallon.
Ives drove the car for 20 years, on family trips, back and forth to work. Finally, in 1990, when it began to get a little temperamental, the Yenko was retired to a shed. Four years ago, at his wife's urging - threatening, maybe - the restoration began. It started at American Legends in Norfolk and was completed at Jesse's Rod Shop in Chesapeake. Ives spent countless hours painstakingly researching correct replacement parts and color of parts for the car. Many of the parts are original. It still gets about 10 miles to the gallon. Ives uses premium gas, adds an octane booster and a lead substitute and drives it every week or so for at least a few miles. Only 71 of the original Yenko Novas are still around; only 12 are still with their original owners. Ives said he believes there may be one other car similar to his in the state, but he's uncertain of its condition. He's tracked one Yenko that was on the same car lot in 1970 as his "baby." It was purchased by a Navy man, he said, and driven to Nevada. The man who bought it, Ives said, now lives in Minnesota, and it has been restored. The Yenko brothers stay in touch.

"His still has the Colonial dealership badge on it," Ives said, "but I have the original sales papers on mine."

The Smithfield car show is sponsored by the Virginia Chevy Lovers Club, and the event celebrates 50 years of Chevy V-8 power. Registration at the show will benefit local fire and rescue squads and Boykins Tavern, an authentic 1700s tavern at the Isle of Wight Courthouse. There's no charge for admission. Vintage Chevies will be spread across the historic town. If it's not raining, Ives' Yenko will be prominently displayed.

"This car is better now than it was when I bought it brand new. It's part of my past, part of my youth."

Charley hasn't asked about it so I guess he must not like the '70 Deuces. I can't bear to give it away but I can sure give you a ride in the old "Detroit Iron". All I have to do is save enough traveling money to come to the SCR 8.
This car sure is fun to drive on the streets and watch the guys with the "rice burners" at the traffic light want to do a little drag racing. I guess they think that the graphics are just for a lot of show and not much go. Man do they get a real surprise when the light turns green. Just can't resist having a little fun with them.

It's great to hear from everyone. Many thanks for the comments on my car. It took a long time to get it done and I sure got disgusted more than once during the resto.
Pete, as to your question about info on the numbers, I would post a request here on the board for Marlin or anyone who might be able to help. I only have a few references and they are really ones that are specific to the '70 Deuces. Another good source is also a book that is available from the major book sellers like Barnes and Noble, it is called "Chevrolet by the Numbers" and it has almost everything that you can imagine for a part description and the matching GM number. I hope this can be of some help to you for your resto work.

It's good to hear from you also. It's been a while since the CCI/Eckler show last July. Many shows in between. I don't recall seeing any other Yenkos at local shows other than yours and mine. Does anyone elso know of any Yenkos in the Southeast area of Virginia?

I am almost positive that we are related. If they are a part of our original family that settled in that area many years ago. Most of our family is located up and down the East coast because it all started with two brothers who came to the "colonies" back a couple of centuries ago. I don't know the folks specifically that you are talking about but they are for sure on the old family tree.

Great job on the restoration. I was just wondering if perhaps you saw my car at Colonial when you bought yours. Mine is red with black stripes and it also has the sport mirrors. It's a long shot I know but I was just curious. I've had my car for 20+ years and I am currently restoring it.

I probably did see your car when I bought my car. I went there right after they got in a large shipment and they had 12 Deuces on the lot(can you imagine?) and they were in 6 different colors. They had each color in an automatic and in a four speed. It was quite a sight for those of us who like these muscle cars. So, thanks to my insurance agent I didn't buy the Corvette but the Deuce instead.
I wish you all the best on your restoration. If I can help with part sources or restoration pictures that I have on CD, please let me know. Your best source is my yet to meet in person, good friend and mentor on this project, Marlin. He reads this board pretty often so I think he would be glad to help also.

I don't know about that race. We haven't heard from Frank on such a challenge. Besides the obvious fact that blue is beautiful, what made you choose YOUR Deuce? Was it between that and another color? What did your friends/family think of the car when it was new? Were they disapointed that you did not get a big block?

I chose the blue without any hesitation because it is my favorite color. The combination of the Fathom blue and the white stripes was enough to start me salivating and when I took it for a test drive, I knew that I had to have that car. The few big block cars that Colonial had in stock again created an insurance problem for me so I had to just settle for the Deuce https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif I haven't been disappointed since except for the period of time before the resto when the engine was continually fouling plugs on 3 cylinders. We took care of that first thing by having the engine blueprinted, line bored and balanced. Now it runs like a jet when I punch the accelerator and at idle it sounds almost like a mean Harley Davidson but you could set a glass of water on the air cleaner and it hardly vibrates. I just am having such a good time with my car since the resto that it's like the car is new again, only better.
I did enjoy reading the articles in the muscle car magazines about SCR7 and it looks like you guys just had a great time either racing(which would now give me the heebie jeebies with the Deuce) or at the show.

Just spoke with Bob McClurg, a freelance photographer who covered SCR7 for Super Chevy and a couple of other magazines. He has assured me he is coming to shoot "a bunch of cars".

Also, the editor of another poplular muslcecar mag is scheduled to be there as well.

It sounds like these magazine guys are really taking notice of the Yenko brand name cars, now. I can remember several years ago when I would tell someone that I owned a Yenko Deuce and they thought it was a Japanese import brand of some kind. I guess they didn't even know that the Yenko name is a middle Eurpoean surname(I think that is correct)

That's the *exact* reason we spend the bucks and rent the track for ourselves...that way, if guys jsut wanna get a picture of their car at the tree...or if they're new to racing at a track and they wanna go through the procedure at their own pace...or if you're on old track dog with a new combo and would like to make some single passes to sort out the chassis...or if you wanna pair up and run a grudge race...it's all good! If any one has any questions now, or later, feel free to ask!
