1969 Z28 ID Help

Looking at a 1969 Z28. I asked for a photo of the engine pad stampings and only received a photo of the assembly plant, build date and the DZ designation. I then asked for a photo of the Vin number stamped on the pad and received the following response: "Most of the X77 cars I have seen do not have the VIN on the engine pad." I am not saying this is wrong, I simply don't know. I thought that it was a government mandate that all cars after 1968 had the Vin stamped somewhere on the block. Could someone please weigh in on this? Thanks

Look on the side of the bellhousing flange next to the oil filter. It is a rough surface so you will need to look closely to make it out. Norwood Camaro's were stamped as such, Van Nuys Camaro's were usually stamped on the engine ID pad next to the assembly date.

Re: 1969 Z28 ID Help

After a few months of 69 production they started to stamp the VIN down by the oilfilter. It was to laborintensive to unmount/mount the generator for the stamping.

It can be very hard to see from the underside of the car but it should be there.

Re: 1969 Z28 ID Help

Thanks for the information. This is a Norwood Ohio car with a body build date of the 3rd week of April and the X77 on the body plate. Having said that, could someone give me a definitive answer as to whether or not a 1969 Norwood Camaro could have been built without a Vin number stamped somewhere on the block. Thanks

The VIN stamping should be by the oil filter flange based on build date. The VIN should be stamped on both the engine and transmission, however some engines were missed or stamped too lightly to read.

We have found at least 3 REAL DZ's that have build dates in the late March to April time frame (V0323DZ - V0409DZ with one later, I believe V0418DZ) none of which have VINS on the Oil filter Boss. There were no traces even after vatting the blocks, rubbing paint into the grain and trying to find something using blown up high res photos.

IMHO If in less than 2 years I can name 3 then there are LOTS!

-----I agree with the above!!! These Norwood cars stampings can be very, very light. They can also be non-existent at one end and viewable at the other. Just depends.......Bill S

Re: 1969 Z28 ID Help

Thanks for all of the input. If indeed there is no vin stamp anywhere on the engine as th owner states but there is a stamp on the pad indicating it is a DZ engine and the X77 is on the cowl, how would this effect the value. i.e. Would this now be considered a real 69 Z28 with a correct DZ engine but not be considered a "matching numbers" car? FYI, there is no paperwork that goes with the car. Just trying to put a value on the car as it stands. Thanks

------Casting date would have to be good and possible verifiable former owner info would help a bunch. Is the trans and rear original???.......Bill S
