Question on e-bay L78 vert
Item number 110378139612 - I wanted to know if the VIN stamp on the engine looks proper? With no docs this would be very important.
Thanks much in advance for any and all comments. I am planning on bidding, but want to measure my response accordingly. |

Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
Eli, I would be leary on this one... Even with the trim tag...Nowadays "matching numbers" could mean anything, or so I'm told.. Not to long ago a judge ruled that "matching numbers" is just verbage even if it is a re-stamp the numbers do match.. However, if you phrase it as "VIN MATCHING NUMBERS" then you will be in some hot water if the buyer finds otherwise.. This was from a lawsuit case. Just food for thought...

Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
Should there not be a (1) stamped to start the VIN. A (1) designates Chevrolet Division I believe. Another car with the trim tag removed? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
Ask for a pic of numbers on the trans, car almost looks like a rebody https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif the hardware for the engine frame mounts looks odd I would like to see if there is a part number on them, also on the tranny cross member, I would definetly due diligence on this one and some pics before restoration would be just dandy https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

[/ QUOTE ] Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the motor's 1029 (Oct 29) assembly date about two weeks after the 10B (early October) build date of the car? Haven't seen that before https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif Besides that, I think the stamping on the motor looks clearer and more perfectly alligned than usual. I'm not a fan of painted decks because it conveniently hides the surface and original broach marks (or lack there of). JMHO |
Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
Thank-you for the input so far. I have asked the seller for a picture of the trans vin and asked if it was possible to post a picture of the engine pad with the paint removed.
Again, I really appreciate each of you taking the time to comment. |
Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
I don't usually comment on the "judgement by photo" threads, but doesn't it appear there is no Tonnawanda code on the stamp? It appears pretty clear as 11029JH.

Re: Question on e-bay L78 vert
-------I generally look at a set of numbers on a pad and when they are as straight and parallel as these appear I have grave doubt. Could the factory have stamped them that neatly??? Sure they could have, but in 30 years of looking at these cars I have only seen 1 or 2 original pad stamps that lined up like that. You can almost forget about what #s are there when they look like this (too nice)!!! Then add in the fact that the pad is painted, covering up any broach marks or milling marks. Make sure a qualified person takes a good hard look at this car before cash changes hands......Bill S
