Steering wheel removal
What's the best way, or tool, to remove steering wheel from 68 Camaro without chipping or damaging wheel. Any tricks? Thanks

Re: Steering wheel removal
You can buy a steering wheel/harmonic balance removal tool from your local parts store. Some of them, like Auto Zone, may even have one you can use.

Re: Steering wheel removal
Get a good steering wheel puller. Something with a name brand. I have seen the cheaper ones break on a difficult steering wheel.
Remove the horn shroud and spray some penetrating oil on the nut and unscrew the nut off of the steering shaft. Spray some more penetrating oil around the top of the shaft and let it soak. Mark the steering wheel and the steering shaft where it lines up with the steering shaft with a scribe to make it easier to line things up when you are done with the removal process. This will keep the steering wheel in the same position. Take a deep impact socket which will clear the steering shaft and will not touch the threads. Place over the steering shaft and hold it. Grab a hammer and give the socket a couple of good raps, to break things loose between the steering shaft splines and the steering wheel. Remove socket and screw the steering wheel remover bolts in the appropriate holes in the steering wheel. Once the steering wheel remover is in place, take a wrench and rotate the big bolt in the center of the remover approximately a 1/4 of a turn to get the steering wheel broken loose and moving. Keep rotating the the center bolt until steering wheel is loose and you can remove it by hand. |
