1969-Z28 stock eliminator
 
At our local dragstrip in Orlando,florida,there was a stock /super stock event today.meet and talked a while to a cool guy that had a 69 Z28.His name is Casey Miles;he bought the car in 1970 at Baldwin cheverolet.He says he still has the window sticker and POP.302 stick car running E/S.Still has the bucket seat ,hurst bent shifter .the tailpipes are still hooked on the car.green in color;ran a best of 11;60 lift the tires up in first and looked to clear air in second.kudos to Casey;really cool to see guys like this still in the hobby.chris

Chris,

Just so I understand, a '69 Z running E/S with a 302 and closed exhaust ran 11.6? At what MPH? No matter what I did to mine, with a single 780 and open exhaust, I could never get the thing to go that quick. What internal mods had he done, did he say?

I doubt the 11.60's were through the mufflers but in the '60's NHRA required the car to at least have the original, stock exhaust still in place hanging in the Stock classes....but it was legal to have the headers open. That's why the infamous '65 Chyrsler A990 Super Stockers with 426 Race Hemis were built with a laughable lightweight, single exhaust system with a large transverse muffler at the the very rear of the car for weight bias. Seems crazy that perhaps the fastest musclecar of the Sixties, the '65 A990 Dodges and Plymouths, were built with single exhaust, but the car was constructed by Chrysler Corp. with meticulous attention to the NHRA Rulebook. Exhaust didn't have to be functional......just still in place.

no ,it was open headers.but the owner still has the tailpipes on the car ,it has a current registered tag on the car and the owners claims he still drives the car on the street from time to time.Chris

the owner gave me his # and I will find out more info on the car.He was working on the shifter and I didn;t want to disturb him too much.Chris

Here is a 4000 lb 1968 Impala running in the E/S class.

396/325, 10.25 compression, 4-speed running 11.94 @114mph!

Back in the early 70's you needed those or at least one exhaust pipe or tail pipe. 11.60's could be done with mostly stock parts and a good gear ratio. You could darn near drive an early 70's style stock eliminator car on the street but not today. The E/Stockers of today are running well into the 10.70's. An average Z/28 back then with some good tuning and headers, tires and a 5:13 gear would run 12 flats all day. That sounds like a real nostalgic TRUE stock eliminator car from old days. Did the guy say where he was from?

That sounds just like a car I saw at Immokalee Raceway in Naples, FL.

That thing was just cool with slapper bars and looking pretty much stock.

Sam,i believe that is actually what this 69 Z28 is.A early 70's style stocker;i didn;t bring my camera;but the owner showed me inside the trunk;;great condition;and still retains the stock gas tank.Mark the owner is from upstate NY.But he said he moved to south florida years ago;so it is probably the same car.Chris
