WOW! Some terrific pictures. Never heard of this until just now. The real "booming" period of drag racing in 1962/63 with all the big cars. Could the following picture possibly be a Max Wedge vs an SD?

Great stuff, thanks Ken.

That looks to be a '63 Dodge 330 sedan (steel front end) in the far lane with an "A/S" which would most likely indicate a Max Wedge stick from that era.

My '62 Plymouth S/S has raced at the Amphitheatre. Concrete pillars in close proximity to the race track? What could go wrong ?

Cool stuff. Thanks!

Looking closer, there appears to be an "A" as in A/SA on the window. That makes sense as the Poncho is definitiely an auto tranny. So the venerable 727 3 speed HD push button auto!

I know this was 1/8 mile racing, and somewhere I have all the results of the Dec. 1962 event, with makes/models/et/etc. Just can't find it on my PC right now....still looking....

Re: Indoor Drag Racing International Amphitheater

Actually it was even shorter than an 1/8 mile. I wanna say it was something like only 440 feet compared to an 1/8 mile being 660 ft. Now these factory Super Stocks being probably 12-13 second cars in the 1/4 were probably only hitting about 75-80 MPH through the lights. The open-header'ed cars had to be unbearably loud! I would have loved to have suffered most of my hearing loss at that particular venue.

VERY CL and thanks for posting this!.
Is the '61 Pontiac shown Arnie B. and the first Passionate Poncho #1 car?.
Also did Mickey T. have anything to do w/ this show...perhaps where he got some of his ideas of indoor racing events from?.
I'm with you on the hearing loss thing Mark and happily suffering from the after effects including full two-stroke deafness in one ear!.
