Cleaning up nos exhaust pipes
 

What is the best methode of cleaning up old shelf wear nos exhaust pipes for a restoration, just fine scratches and factory sticky stuff and dirty looking.

I like 0000 steel wool, some thinner or WD/40 and some aluminum or stainless polish. Some guys may think the steel wool may be a little harsh but I use it. Have fun!

When Pypes was doing my exhaust, they said if you do not want condensation blowout all over the place (pipe joints), you should put some black RTV sealant around the inside of the joints when you put them together, they said it works real well at sealing that mess and holds up very well over time. You have to clean the 2 surfaces real well prior to smearing that crap around in there

I have used 0000 steel wool followed by Acetone. Use gloves and a new clean rag when applying acetone. It wont hurt you but will remind you of any cuts or scrapes you may have on your hands.

Gardner exhaust provide a chemical like Nev-r Seize that appears to be silicone based. It is supposed to seal the pipes yet provide lubrication during the fitting process.

A muffler shop I have dealt with for yaers used a grey/black compound they affectionally refer to as "Bearsh%t" for sealing exhaust.
