San Diego Subs

I was on vacation in San Diego a couple of weeks ago. We drove up to Point Lomas, and by pure chance I got to see something that is very rare, a Boomer leaving port, passing a Chilean sub, (the Thompson), coming into port for a visit.

It was very overcast, misty kind of weather. I think I need to play around with the file to clean it up some. Very cool to watch how they take one of those big guys out through the channel.

LNAEMLC....or as they say...."Late night and early morning low clouds" better known as the marine layer.

Very cool photo. We have the same USCG inflatables with the 50 cal on the bow running blockades between the charter boats, ferrys and the subs. Always love watching these interactions.

Chris, I may be wrong but I believe that's a 5.56mm SAW, not a .50 cal. Look at the size of the magazine, not long enough for a .50.

For those who have never been to San Diego, here are a couple of other shots to help with the perspective of size and location.

First is a shot of the harbor, without any zoom used. The boomer is at the far left, right behind the wake of a jet ski. The guy on the jet ski was either a SEAL or completely insane.

Next is a closer look at the same scene. Those little spots on the deck of the sub are people.

Last one, a better shot of the two boats passing.

Compare the the picture that Chris took, from a much closer distance, of the men on the boat's sail, to my picture taken from about a mile away. They don't call them "Boomers" for no good reason. The Ohio class missile platforms are a real Doomsday machine. (I'm just glad that they're OUR doomsday machine.) You are probably right about the small arms, Andy, it's been a while since I've been upclose and onboard.
