building up a dz 302, opinions?

Hey guys, Ive had a Dz 302 block in my garage for a few years now. I wanted to do something with it. I had my machinist go through it and make sure its a good block no issues (turned out good) my questions... ive got my survivor 69 z all correct. Now i want something that has some more power.

I want to build this 302 to have fun with, what should i do for cam, heads, pistons etc. Anyone have one they built that they would recommend building also?

Thanks!

btw, this engine will see mostly street, with the ocasional heavy right foot

Matt

If you want an engine with a pedigree, you should contact Warren Dernoshek in Canonsburg. He still does a few builds a year and certainly has the credentials as Don Yenko won many races when Warren ran the shop in the 60's and prepped his racecars. He builds the engines for some serious Vintage cars, including mine but also does street performance. He can be reached at 724-941-9765.

Here's a little more civilized version I did for a customer while back:

My engine builder wants to sell me a nos set of 14011049 sbc gm aluminum heads for the 302, he bought them in the 80's. Anyone have any experience with them?

You need to establish two things before you start buying parts.

1) Your budget

2) Your performance goals

Bowtie heads would be cool, but do you really need them? A set of well prepared double hump heads will support a lot more power than most people will give them credit for, plus they retain the "originality" factor, if that matters.

Answer 1 & 2 and we'll go from there.

Haha, didnt kill the thread. Ive been super busy. Did some trading, ended up with the aluminum 049 heads and a super nice 1178 crank. We are going for high compresion, Solid roller cam. Not sure if im staying with race gas or e85. It may be a winter project as i just had a 427 bbc built that hurt the wallet for engine building as of right now. Ill be slowly buying parts as time goes on.
