Re: old newspaper car wreck
I once heard a buddy arguing with a policeman (and actually winning!) that he didn't care about the seat belt laws and that it was his personal right to want to be thrown clear of the vehicle in case of an accident!

Dad went out and got another bus the next day. Continued to drive VW buses until mid 80's when he switched to Chrysler mini vans, still driving one today. it was the first day of school and my sisters had missed the bus, legend has it my mother was trying to catch the bus, pass the bus or just rattle his cage and get him loose. |

Re: old newspaper car wreck
My dad's first new car was a '56 VW bought in Reno upon marrying my mom. Mom's parents lived in Sacramento so naturally mom wanted to go home every weekend to visit mummy-daddy. Dad, a budding sports car enthusiast, having traded his '52 MG-TD in on the new bug, liked to drive the old curvy 2-lane Highway 40 in a spirited manner, conditions permitting. One day on the way down the road to Sacramento, with my infant older sister in her car-crib in back, dad was really moving through a long sweeping corner when the rear end started to lift and the rear tire on the outside began to howl. Luckily my dad didn't lift suddenly or hit the brakes, he just drove through it carefully and the car settled back to normal. My mother said no more sports car stuff in the bug!
