Shipping Parts
 

I have some set of heads and a couple of trannys I want to sell. What kind of containers are you guys using to ship these parts? Responses with pictures would be greatly appreciatted.

What method of shipping or carrier is the most economical for these heavy items?

I've never shipped a trans but when I ship a head, I just get some cardboard and lay it on the floor then wrap the head up in it two to three times, using a rubber mallet to keep the cardboard tight to the head.

I've never shipped a trans, but the last time I shipped cylinder heads, I built two home-made wooden crates that will hold either a SB or BB head. Either head will bolt to the bottom of the box so they can't shift inside, and both crates have oval hand holes on either side. Overkill?...maybe, but they work.

Another option is to check with your local engine/speed shop and see if they have any empty aftermarket cylinder head boxes laying around. Those boxes are extremely sturdy and will protect a head very well.

I make wooden crates for all transmissions being shipped. Thought I had a pic on the computer but I don't.

I have shipped heads in similar cardboard boxes but line with thin plywood and then put head in garbage bag and fill the box with that expanding spray foam. Works great.

I use 24x12x12 boxes for heads. I shrink wrap, then bubble wrap the heads and put them in the boxes with packing peanuts. Transmissions go in custom wood crates. I'll see if I have any pictures of the crates and will post if I do.

I see Kurt uses FedEx Ground. Who does everyone else use?

Last year i shipped out a Crankshaft from Canada to the USA,
Over $100 in shipping fees. 70 lbs is not cheap to ship.
I got lucky as my buddy ordered a new Eagle crankshaft and gave me his empty crankshaft box which had special styrofoam fitted for a crankshaft.

I could imagine that a single Head or pair would be very expensive to ship.
Just curious to know what the shipping costs would be to shipp a Head or Trans?
