How can I find a specific car with only the VIN?

I have a 396 motor that was born in a 1967 Chevelle SS built in the Fremont, CA plant. I'm trying to reunite the motor with the car. I'm going to post the partial VIN and what I expect to be the full VIN so perhaps the owner of the car can find me.

Partial VIN stamped on the deck is 7Z151822

I expect that the full VIN would be either:
138377Z151822 for a hardtop,
138677Z151822 for a convertible,
138177Z151822 for a sport coupe, or
138117Z151822 for a sedan.

The motor was assembled on May 31, 1967 so the car would have been assembled late in the model year - in June or July of 1967.

I'd like to make a project out of my search for the car, so can anyone give me some direction or advice as to how I can find out where the car was last registered or how I ought to go about my search? Of course, I've googled the VIN and nothing comes up. Thanks for any help.

Members can PM me, but if a non-member reaches this site, I can be contacted by phone or text at: four zero three - eight zero three - three eight seven nine.

Dale at Chevellestuff has an orphaned section. [email protected] is his email address.

None of those VINs come up in the Department of Justice's National Motor vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) records. This doesn't necessarily mean that the vehicle isn't out there somewhere it just means that no activity has occurred in the last several years with a U.S. DMV. DMVs since about 2009 have had their computers inter-connected with NMVTIS and sometimes the records are only updated if new activity occurs. It could be that the car is out there unregistered or registered permanently as an antique or collectable vehicle.

Bryan,

Interesting reply. How is the NMVTIS accessed?

Thanks for checking that Bryan! Didn't know that existed.

I checked the Team Chevelle orphaned car/motor thread and no matches. I'll post the information there as well.
Thanks guys.

Here's a photo of the pad... The EG code is for a 1967 L78 375hp 4-speed motor. Sure would like to reunite the car and motor.

I just requested a NCRS History report. Maybe that will give me a starting point for my search.
