1968 L-88 427 Shortblock Standard Bore Super Clean
1968 L88 427 Shortblock
This shortblock came from an estate that was being cleaned out by HASMAT due to oil, etc on the property. Thank goodness this engine was saved before it was sent to the scrap yard. Who knows how many cool parts didn't survive. There was also a flat bottom boat with an L-88 engine it in on the property. I was not lucky enough to get that. I imagine this shortblock was a spare for the boat. This engine looks to have been run for very short period of time. It is standard bore with no ridge on top of the cylinders and clear broach marks visible in every cylinder. One piston and rod were missing from the shortblock when I got it. I have since located the correct piston and rod which are included with the engine. I am not sure if the piston and rod were robbed from the shortblock for the engine in the boat or if the piston was damaged due to a dropped valve, etc. The cylinder with the missing piston is excellent with no damage. The numbers on this engine are as follows: Block: Casting- 3916321 Date Code- L 18 7 Pad Stamp- CE862626 Crank: Forging number 7115 Rods- Dimple with 3/8 bolts Pistons- Std Bore Forged GM 3906648 Original standard bore L-88 shortblocks rarely come up for sale. This shortblock also came to me with these heads that I currently have on Ebay: 3919842 Heads I did not keep these heads with the engine since the chambers have been opened up. I would sell these heads with the engine for an additional $2000. I also have unaltered 3919842 heads available. This is an awesome standard bore shortblock. $3750 for the shortblock Thanks, Jason |
Re: 1968 L-88 427 Shortblock Standard Bore Super Clean
Before I ask my question I want to say that I am not in any way saying anything bad about this engine or Jason. Did the L-88 come with "Rods- Dimple with 3/8 bolts" from the factory? I thought that floating pins and rods with 7/16 bolts were used on these engines. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks, James |
Re: 1968 L-88 427 Shortblock Standard Bore Super Clean
James,
I think others can chime in here but I believe 67-68 l-88s came with 3/8 dimple rods which this engine has. The 69 engines had 7/16 dimple rods. Jason |

Re: 1968 L-88 427 Shortblock Standard Bore Super Clean
----The original 7/16th rods were in Red Alert for the entire time it was raced till I sold it. Not sure if Tom has changed them out or not. I had two other sets and every time we had a looky my engine builder (Jimmy Reid) said the set in the engine was the best set. Just going on that, Id say that Zora made a very good decision.......Bill S
