1969 SS 396 Chevelle
I friend of mine called me while looking at a newly imported Chevelle. He didnīt have a camera with him so he just gave me the numbers from tags. Iīd like to get some help with this please:
VIN: 136379B3454XX Trimtag: 13637BAL181023 BDY TR 753 5757 PNT 21 B L 117220 Canīt understand the "21". He said the rivet covered part of the build week but still donīt understand it unless it was 01B instead of 21 B. What production week would be ok considering the VIN ? What does the L and 117220 mean ? He said it was an "honest" car, repainted but unrestored. Needs a lot of work. Probably not the original engine. 4-speed car with disc-brakes, 6000 redline. Cragar SS Wheels. |

Re: 1969 SS 396 Chevelle
The B L are likely located close to each other and the B is not likely part of the assembly date code. The placement in my Baltimore list indicates either a 01D or 02A assembly date code. The 21 may be 02A, with the 0 covered by the tag rivet. A photo of the tag would help. It is possible that there could be additional numbers following the assembly date code and this could indicate a special order vehicle. Sounds like a good chevelle regardless. thanks for sharing the info. take care Andy

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Probably the most controversial is the letter "L" as to whether or not this letter indicates any SS396 trim and therefore can prove a 1969 Chevelle was ordered with the SS396 option. At least one verified SS-optioned Malibu sport coupe has been found without this letter "L" and another known to not be an SS has this letter. Again, there is no real proof one way or the other.</div></div>
If you read the quote above, <span style="font-style: italic">every</span> documented 1969 Chevelle Super Sport made in Kansas or Baltimore has the "L" except one. I'll let you make your own conclusion. Kurt |
