New Garage

Guys,

Looking for some input on the size of a new shop/garage. I am considering building a shop 40' x 50' or 40' x 40'. I want a bathroom in the shop too. I know some of you have shops at your residences and was just looking for feedback. Are these good basic dimensions or is there a better dimension to work with? Naturally bigger is better but don't need to build something too large. Any feedback from past experiences is appreciated.

Thanks,

Lawrence

I built a 30x30 and its alot better than nothing(I couldnt fit much bigger in my back yard) but build it as big as you can - you will never have too much space. I opted out of the bathroom due to expense of the plumbing and house is 5 feet away. of course you want a lift in it and you'll need room around that, IMO the lift was the best money spent- Priceless!

I went with 50 foot wide, as it allows for 5 cars width wise. It is nominally 24 ft deep, on the ends, with the center bumping out to 30 ft deep (you just don't see it unless you walk around to the back). 16 ft truss ceiling (car lifts can go in any bay). I have 9 cars in it now. 9/12 pitch roof works out well too.

I chose to build a second car storage/paint/ body work garage (20x25) down the road (much cheaper floating slab foundation), versus adding that to the main garage (that has a heavy duty expensive foundation). I have a 1800 square foot limit for 2 out buildings. So I went with a 1300 square foot and a 500 plan.

40x75 here.. Build it as big as you can as a garage is never big enough. then you never say, I shoulda....

Bill how many cars can you park in the 75' depth? I was thinking of going 40 x 65.

Thanks

I have doors at both ends of my shop.It works as a drive through and you can have your car loaded on the trailer hooked up to the tow vehicle. It's convenient for an early start to the track or car show. The doors are extra wide and high to clear the trailer.
Good luck.
